Amidst the recent furore over the clamour by several leading figures in the game to introduce a fortnight’s winter break to Premier League proceedings, one salient piece of white-hot hypocrisy seems to have been conveniently overlooked.

Many a top-flight manager has been quick to deride the constipated domestic fixture list, with the resultant exhaustion used to vehemently excuse the various ailments and collapses in form that befall many players after toiling away for a 50+ game season.

Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce has long been a prominent voice in the crusade against the overly congested schedule, admitting recently that ‘most of the players who play in the Premier League will be very, very fatigued’ come the end of the season due to the gruelling demands of having to play so many games within such close proximity of one another.

Strange then that Allardyce should agree to wheel his side out on an eight-game, 23,475 mile round-trip pre-season tour of  Australia – a tour which, you would think, sits in stark contrast to his very obvious concerns regarding his squad’s physical welfare.

Similarly, Everton aren’t far behind Blackburn (about 577 miles behind in fact), as the Toffees also chose to chase the Antipodean coin as part of their pre-season preparations under the frankly ludicrous guise of competing for the Roars Against Racism Cup in Brisbane.

I guess the Shameless Shill Cup didn’t have quite the same ring to the marketing department.

Again, when juxtaposed with manager David Moyes‘ continual bemoaning of his depleted squad’s injury problems over the last couple of seasons, his side’s 22,898 mile excursion ‘down under’ seems more than a little duplicitous.

Birmingham have clocked up 16,561 air miles during their tour of the Far East, no doubt pandering to the commercial whims of their Hong Kong-based CEO’s, and Manchester United, City, Bolton and Tottenham have racked up nearly 50,000 miles between them by travelling Stateside in a bid to meet those impending merchandise sales targets.

It seems that the wide-eyed promise of all those easily-acquired dollars may have served to distract the respective club’s hierarchies from the fact that all this pre-season globe-trotting may have just as serious fitness implications as a few extra FA cup replays or international friendlies – although the lack of (or lesser) commercial viability of the latter seem to make them an altogether more pressing concern when the time comes around.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with clubs suckling the corporate teat per se as it’s a measure now necessitated by the bloated financial folly that football has become over the years.

However, what does rile me is that this bare-faced hawking is continually written off as a factor in players struggling to perform in the quota of games that actually matter during any given season, when Liverpool’s 24-hour train journey to Madrid was elevated to the status of a mini-apocalypse in terms of player fatigue just three short months ago.

The ‘winter sabbatical’ debate will probably rumble on for a good few years before any tangible efforts are made to address it (as is the way of the current work-shy scheisters that staff the Football Association along with their European and global contemporaries) but, if Premier League clubs continue to choose to fill every waking off-season hour with revenue-boosting exhibitions in a relentless bid to sate the money men, then they probably deserve all the sodding hamstring tweaks they get.

Transfer Rumors: Manchester City to move for Chelsea star Drogba

championsleague Transfer Rumors: Manchester City to move for Chelsea star Drogbaliverpool Transfer Rumors: Manchester City to move for Chelsea star Drogbamanchestercity Transfer Rumors: Manchester City to move for Chelsea star Drogba

England

Shock Drogba Swoop For City

According to the Sun, Manchester City are getting set to make a £20m bid for Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

Analysis: This one could have some legs, as it’s actually a great move for Chelsea. Sure, Drogba’s coming off an amazing season, but he isn’t a spring chicken, and there aren’t many 32-year-olds who can command £20m and up. And selling Drogba to City also means that there’s one less competitor in their pursuit of Fernando Torres.

Liverpool Land Jovanovic

Liverpool have finally completed the signing of free agent Serbian attacker Milan Jovanovic. The 29-year-old signed a pre-contract with Liverpool in February, and after some speculation that he could waver, the former Standard Liege star has penned a three-year deal to make his move to Anfield official. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: There’s someone a little further down who could take a tip from this one.

Trio Tussle For Wright-Phillips

Arsenal are ahead of Liverpool and Tottenham for Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips, according to the Sun. The England international is available for a low price, but his wage demands could prove to be an issue with Arsenal and perhaps the other suitors as well.

Analysis: Considering what a fit, in form SWP can bring to the table, and that any buyer won’t have to reach too deep into the pockets for the transfer fee, having to stump up an extra £10k or £20k per week isn’t asking too much.

Spurs To Snag Steven‘s Signature?

The Sun also says that Tottenham could try to sway Everton to part with midfielder Steven Pienaar by offering either Robbie Keane or Jermaine Jenas.

Analysis: Pienaar hasn’t yet signed a new contract with Everton, and that situation doesn’t appear to close to being resolved anytime soon. With Pienaar’s current contract up after next season, if this drags out deep into the summer, Everton might decide to cash in while they can. So, if Tottenham don’t mind being patient, they can still get their man soon enough.

Blackburn Target Dos Santos

Blackburn are considering a move for Tottenham forward Giovani dos Santos, according to the Sun.

Analysis: Blackburn could certainly benefit from his talents, but Harry Redknapp has opened the door for him to have a breakthrough this season at White Hart Lane, provided he holds up his end of the bargain. If he stays but we see him in this space again in January, that will likely mean that he didn’t.

West Ham Close On Barrera

West Ham are set to finalize a £3m deal for Pumas winger Pablo Barrera within the next couple of days. Espanyol and Everton have both also made bids, but the 23-year-old Mexico international looks to be on his way to Upton Park. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: By adding Barrera and Thomas Hitzlsperger, West Ham have done well to greatly strengthen their midfield, and they’ve done so by spending very little. The addition of the versatile Barrera, who can be effective on either flank, will give Avram Grant no shortage of selection options. It’s a good headache to have though, certainly.

Alcaraz To Back Out of Wigan Deal?

Paraguayan defender Antolin Alcaraz says that he could change his mind about signing for Wigan. The former Club Brugge man has already agreed a deal and signed a pre-contract with Wigan, but his impressive World Cup showing has attracted new interest. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: It’s understandable that he might be a little starry-eyed if some bigger names have come in for him after seeing perform well in South Africa, and hey, until the contract’s officially signed, he’s still on the market. But he did give his word to the club, and it’d be a real slap in the face for Roberto Martinez if Alcaraz backed out at this point.

Baggies Stand Firm On Dorrans

West Bromwich Albion have rejected a third bid from West Ham for midfielder Graham Dorrans, and club chairman Jeremy Peace has insisted that the 23-year-old isn‘t for sale to anyone, West Ham or otherwise. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Well, Fulham kept trying and trying for Jonathan Greening last summer until they were able to land him, so perhaps West Ham is hoping persistence pays off. I don’t see that happening this time though.

Spain

Villarreal Sign Valero

Villarreal have signed midfielder Borja Valero from West Bromwich Albion. The 25-year-old, who excelled on loan at Mallorca last season, has agreed a five-year deal with his new club. (The Mirror)

Analysis: Valero was a big reason why Mallorca very nearly qualified for the Champions League, and he could have the same impact for Villarreal, who finished a disappointing seventh last season and missed out on Europe by just a handful of points.

Italy

Genoa Sign Eduardo

A few days ago, I mentioned that Sporting Braga had offered goalkeeper Eduardo to Arsenal. Well, Braga won‘t have to worry about meeting up with him in the Champions League, as the Portuguese #1 has agreed a move to Genoa. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: After having one of Serie A’s best defensive records in their excellent 2008-09 season, Genoa had one of the worst last season, allowing 61 goals (tied with last-place Livorno for second-most allowed, behind only Siena, who finished 19th). With Eduardo’s shot-stopping skills, I think that total will decrease by quite a bit this coming season.

France

Bordeaux Eye Guiza

Bordeaux are interested in Fenerbahce striker Daniel Guiza. The former Mallorca man has scored 11 goals in back-to-back seasons in Turkey, and he has 34 goals in 93 total appearances in those two seasons. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Fenerbahce have actively been searching for a new striker, and this is also not the first time that Guiza has been linked with a move, so one could assume it’s a matter of when, not if, Guiza will be leaving this summer. With his recent record of success and Bordeaux’s need for a new striker after Marouane Chamakh’s departure, I don’t think the French side will have a problem helping Fener recoup much of the €17.4m that was spent on Guiza two summers ago.

Turkey

Besiktas’ Robinho Bid Rejected

Manchester City have rejected a £16.7m bid by Besiktas for Robinho. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Valencia have been linked with Robinho in recent days, and they’ve come into quite a bit of cash this summer, so we’ll see if City can convince them to stump up upwards of 20m.

Galatasaray Swoop For Cana

Along with another new center back, Sunderland now have a need for a new midfielder and captain, as Lorik Cana has left to join Galatasaray in a £5m deal. (The Mirror)

Analysis: Unfortunate for Sunderland, considering how important Cana had become in such a short time, but the chance to be much closer to his family is one he couldn’t pass up, and neither is the chance for regular European football.

Portugal

Benfica Bid For Almeida

Benfica have made a bid of around €7m for Werder Bremen striker Hugo Almeida. Almeida scored 11 goals in 34 appearances for Werder last season, and he also netted in Portugal‘s 7-0 demolition of North Korea in the World Cup group stage. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Almeida has a solid strike rate for Werder (52 goals in 144 appearances, including 14 in 40 European appearances), but he only made 13 league starts last season, and with Werder having landed highly rated Austrian striker Marko Arnautovic, Almeida’s very expendable. Benfica aren’t short on depth and quality at striker, but his reliability in front of goal will ensure he has his fair share of opportunities.

Transfer Rumors: Chelsea lodge initial bid for Liverpool star Torres

championsleague Transfer Rumors: Chelsea lodge initial bid for Liverpool star Torresliverpool Transfer Rumors: Chelsea lodge initial bid for Liverpool star Torresmanchestercity Transfer Rumors: Chelsea lodge initial bid for Liverpool star Torres

England

Chelsea Bid For Torres

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have made a formal bid of around £40m for Fernando Torres, with Roman Abramovich reportedly having no qualms about paying up to £70m for the Liverpool striker.

Analysis: Looking at the big picture, selling Torres is a no-brainer. Even if all of the money received from the sale isn’t given to Roy Hodgson to spend, he could do more than enough to help Liverpool be better off than they would be with Torres still on the books, especially considering Torres’ injury issues from last season.

Sneijder Tops United Wish List

Manchester United are high on a move for Dutch hero Wesley Sneijder, but according to the The Sun, it could cost Sir Alex Ferguson £35m to snare the Inter playmaker.

Analysis: Sneijder’s only improved his worth and valuation with his performances in Holland’s World Cup run, and he’d no doubt be a big hit at United. However, that might be a little more than United could be looking to spend on one player right now. Then again, shelling out that kind of money for a player of his caliber might be necessary to keep up with and stay ahead of the Joneses for now and for the future.

Ibrahimovic Open To City Move

According to the Daily Mail, Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is interested in being reunited with Roberto Mancini at Manchester City, with an offer of 16.5m plus Robinho reportedly being discussed. However, such a move could hinge on one condition: Ibrahimovic would look to become the club’s highest earner.

Analysis: Whether or not he deserves such wages as he would be looking to get is one thing, but that could be said for many of their post-takeover signings. But whether or not there’d be any qualms about meeting that condition, there’s really no way around it if you factor in what Ibra is on already and what City have many of those new signings on.

City’s Balotelli Bid Rejected

Ibrahimovic is only one of several forwards on Manchester City‘s list. Another one is Inter‘s Mario Balotelli, who, according to the 19-year-old‘s agent, has been the subject of a bid from City – which Inter turned down. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: As much as Balotelli has been linked with moves elsewhere, I think that he needs to try to establish himself more at Inter and also make a step up in the maturity department in that environment before he makes a move.

Podolski On City Radar?

Another option for City is German star Lukas Podolski. According to the Daily Mail, City are considering offering Cologne £16.5m for the 25-year-old attacker, who is also receiving interest from Italy and Spain.

Analysis: High risk, high reward. Perhaps a move to City would bring out that Podolski that we know can light it up for Germany, but at the same time, City could well get the same return on their investment as they did with Roque Santa Cruz last season.

Liverpool Line Up Ruiz

Also according to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are set to make a £12.5m move for FC Twente forward Bryan Ruiz.

Analysis: FC Twente got him for a bargain last summer, and £12.5m would be a bargain for Liverpool. Ruiz is very good and only getting better, and when you factor in the addition of another versatile forward in Milan Jovanovic, I don’t think Liverpool be ailing too much if it does happen that Torres is sold.

Alex After Ayew

Birmingham City are interested in Marseille winger Andre Ayew. The 20-year-old Ayew, the son of Ghanaian legend Abedi Pele, is rated at £5.5m. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: I can’t say I see Ayew making this kind of step up just yet, as he’s set to figure prominently in Didier Deschamps’ plans this season as Marseille look to defend their Ligue 1 title and make a Champions League run.

Blackburn Track Jelavic

Blackburn are currently stuck in transfer limbo due to ongoing takeover talks, but one of the targets that Sam Allardyce would like to land when he can spend is Rapid Vienna striker Nikicia Jelavic, for whom he could make a £4m bid. Jelavic had a very impressive season for Rapid Vienna last season, scoring 18 league goals and bagging a few more in the Europa League. (The Mirror)

Analysis: Blackburn had only one player hit the ten-goal mark last season, and that was David Dunn, so it’s safe to say things need to improve up front. But Nikola Kalinic should be much improved after getting his feet wet last season, and a linkup of the two Croatians could well prove to be prosperous, even if Jelavic struggles initially like Kalinic did last season.

Premier League Return For Pennant?

Former Arsenal and Liverpool man Jermaine Pennant is being shopped to Premier League clubs, as he looks to return to England after only one season at Real Zaragoza, due to his girlfriend’s pregnancy. Wolves have turned down the chance to sign him, but he has now been offered to West Ham and Wigan. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: It makes it all the easier for Pennant to want to move after the first season of his Spanish experiment didn’t go well at all, but given his numerous question marks, finding a suitor is easier said than done. However, talent overcomes many things, and though he hasn’t shown it consistently, Pennant has talent. It’s not too late for him to make the kind of impact that he has only shown in flashes over the last few years, but only if he wants to. If he doesn’t, well, I hear the Championship is nice.

Newcastle Close On United Starlet

Newcastle United are close to clinching a loan deal for young Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley. (The Mirror)

Analysis: Cleverley had a very impressive loan campaign for Watford last season, scoring 11 goals and assisting on five more in 33 appearances (all starts), and having a significant impact for Newcastle this season would enhance his hopes of being in the first-team frame at United in the next year or two.

Italy

Genoa Move For Miguel

Genoa have offered up €5m and midfielder Alberto Zapater for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: The cash involved isn’t much, but the addition of a promising young-ish midfielder in Zapater, who scored four goals and started 25 games in his first season at Genoa – and has been linked with a move to Valencia, could make this offer worth thinking about. However, after selling Joao Moutinho to Porto, Sporting might not be too keen on losing another key piece just yet.

Germny

Wolfsburg Close On Kjaer

VfL Wolfsburg are closing in on a deal for highly-rated Palermo defender Simon Kjaer. According to Palermo president Mauricio Zamparini, the deal will be finalized within days. (Goal.com)

Analysis: It might be considered a step down, since Wolfsburg aren’t in Europe this season, but it’s not a bad move for Kjaer at all. With the addition of he and Arne Friedrich to strengthen a leaky defense, Wolfsburg are positioning themselves to make a run at a second title in three years. If they can hold on to Edin Dzeko – or find a quality replacement when he’s sold, their chances will be even better.

Ukraine

Chygrynskiy Returns To Shakhtar

After only one season at Barcelona, Ukrainian center back Dmytro Chygrynskiy is on his way back to former club Shakhtar Donetsk. Shakhtar sold Chygrynskiy for €25m last summer, and he’s returning to the club for €10m less. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Chygrynskiy is a talented young defender, and another big move will come in the near future, but it’s better for him right now to return to Shakhtar, get regular playing time and continue to develop, and then make a move back to one of Europe’s top clubs when the situation is in position for him to be an impact player instead of getting lost in the shuffle.

Transfer Rumors: Man City close on trio, Real land Benfica wiz Di Maria, Henry to leave Barcelona, and more

championsleague Transfer Rumors: Man City close on trio, Real land Benfica wiz Di Maria, Henry to leave Barcelona, and morelyon Transfer Rumors: Man City close on trio, Real land Benfica wiz Di Maria, Henry to leave Barcelona, and moremanchestercity Transfer Rumors: Man City close on trio, Real land Benfica wiz Di Maria, Henry to leave Barcelona, and more

With the World Cup heading towards the latter stages, we’re already seeing things rapidly heating up in the world of transfers. Up to this point, there’s been mostly speculation and little substance, but that’s about to change in the next several days.

Manchester City’s second straight summer super spending spree (that’s a lot of s’s to take in, I know) is set to kick off in a big way over the coming days, with not one, not two, but at least three – and maybe more – deals set to be done this week.

But the Citizens aren’t the only club who’s got big money to spend and big names to spend it on, and it’s safe to say that we’re going to start seeing the summer transfers lists start to become a lot more filled up with well-known names soon.

England

City Close On Silva, Toure, And Milner

The entrance at Manchester City is about to become very, very congested.

Spanish reports suggest that City are nearing a deal for Valencia winger David Silva. City could be set to sweeten the deal by including striker Roque Santa Cruz. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Everyone wins here. City would get their target and offload a bad investment a surplus squad member, while Valencia would get even more funds to add to their squad and land a new striker without having to spend any of those funds.

First in the door, however, looks to be Barcelona’s Yaya Toure, who’s set to finalize his move to Eastlands within the next few days. (Metro)

Analysis: A report in the Daily Mail yesterday said that there could still yet be a twist, with Toure set to hold talks with Barcelona’s new president before making his final decision. However, I think it’s all but a done deal now.

And it also looks like Aston Villa’s James Milner could join the party soon as well, as according to reports, City could wrap up a £25m deal for the England midfielder by the end of the week. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Aston Villa will certainly hate to lose him, but the 25m will soften the blow. With that, Martin O’Neill can make the kind of reinforcements that would make Villa an even better overall team than they were even with Milner in as fine of a run of form as he was last season.

Arsenal Land Koscielny

Arsenal have finally agreed a deal with Lorient for center back Laurent Koscielny. Arsenal will pay £8.1m initially in a deal that could rise to £10m with add-ons, and the 24-year-old will pen a four-year deal with his new club. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Center back was one of the top priorities last summer and Arsenal addressed it early with the signing of Thomas Vermaelen, and it’s good to see that they’ve moved quickly to address it this summer with it once again being a priority thanks to multiple expected departures at the back.

Blackburn Target Bance

Blackburn are also considering a move for FSV Mainz striker Aristide Bance. The 25-year-old Burkina Faso international scored 10 goals last season in helping newly-promoted Mainz finish an impressive ninth. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Bance certainly has the physical attributes to be able to hold his own in the Premier League. At 6’4’’ and over 200 pounds, he won’t be muscled off of the ball easily, that’s for sure. He also knows how to find the back of the net well too, and at £3.5m, he’d be a sound investment for Blackburn.

Birmingham Big On Di Natale And Mbokani

Birmingham City have also made an approach for Udinese striker Antonio di Natale. (The Mirror)

Analysis: The money that Birmingham would have to fork out for the fee and his wages is indeed a little higher than a club with their budget should normally pay for someone who’ll soon be 33, but Di Natale has only gotten better with age, so he’s worth the investment if Birmingham make it.

Birmingham have also entered the race for highly-rated Standard Liege’s Dieumerci Mbokani. The 24-year-old had been linked with a move to Fulham, but with that move falling through, Birmingham are now in contention to land the £8m Congolese striker. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Mbokani’s first name means ‘Thank you God’, and Alex McLeish will certainly be thanking the man upstairs if he can land him, as he’ll have that front line that he needs for Birmingham to be capable of bettering last season’s impressive finish and perhaps challenging for a spot in Europe.

Hammers Target Remy And Juarez

West Ham are interested in Nice striker Loic Remy and versatile Pumas and Mexico star Efrain Juarez. Remy scored 14 goals for Nice last season and is valued at £10m, while Juarez, who can play at the back and in midfield, is set to be the subject of a £6m move by the Hammers. (The Sun)

Analysis: West Ham are going to need to splash a little cash if they’re to avoid another relegation scrap and actually have a chance to make some noise this season and beyond, and this is the way to do it. Remy and Juarez are two very promising young talents that not only have the goods to be key pieces of Avram Grant’s plans for the future, but to step in and make a big difference immediately.

Everton Bid For Gueye

Strasbourg striker Magaye Gueye says that Everton have agreed a fee for him, after it emerged that the Toffees had made a bid of a little less than £1m for the 19-year-old. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: This one’s certainly more for the future, but if Everton have a rash of injuries up front as was the case last season, he could well get his chance to impress sooner rather than later.

Spain

Real Sign Di Maria, Tevez To Follow?

Real Madrid have confirmed that they’ve agreed a deal for Benfica winger Angel di Maria. Di Maria will pen a six-year deal with the club, and he becomes Jose Mourinho’s first signing since taking over at Real. (BBC Sport)

Analysis: As promising as Di Maria already was, he took a huge step forward last season and had a stellar campaign in leading Benfica to a league title. Prior to last season, it could be said that he wasn’t quite ready to make that step up to one of the European powers, but he clearly is now.

According to reports, Real will also try to land Carlos Tevez for €48m. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: It would seem unlikely at this point that City would entertain offers for Tevez, but perhaps it’s not out of the question. Anyone can be considered expendable there now with all of the expected movement in and out, and Roberto Mancini openly said that just as much a couple of months ago when Tevez mentioned his unhappiness with the training regime.

Henry To Leave Barca

Barcelona have confirmed that striker Thierry Henry is leaving the club. (ESPN Soccernet)

Analysis: This one was only a matter of time, really, with the combination of his limited impact last season, the signing of David Villa, and the speculation surrounding a move to the U.S. Good to get it quickly so that he can sort out his future as soon as possible, whether it be a move to MLS, a return to the Premier League, or something else entirely. He may not be the same Henry as even two seasons ago, but he still has plenty of goals left in the tank.

Italy

Inter In Swap Swoop For Bastos?

Inter Milan are set to offer Lyon cash plus out of favor winger Mancini in exchange for Michel Bastos. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Perhaps Lyon would prefer straight cash, but this could be a solid deal. AC Milan are reportedly interested in holding onto him after his loan spell there last season, but a move somewhere he’d start regularly could be just what Mancini needs to fully rediscover his brilliant form from his time with Roma.

Turkey

Fenerbahce Up Huntelaar Bid

After AC Milan rejected their €18m bid for striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Fenerbahce have come back with an improved offer of €23m. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Reasonable offer that is, considering that AC Milan snapped him up for 15m last summer, and it’s true that his future at AC Milan is anything but certain. I imagine Turkey isn’t Huntelaar’s ideal destination, but even a move there is in the cards, Milan would be wise to not act until a deal for a new striker is already in place.
