Manchester United interested in Danish keeper Lindegaard

Manchester United have a concrete interest in Aalesunds FK’s Danish keeper Anders Lindegaard, according to the Norwegian club’s director.

The 26-year-old Lindegaard moved from Danish side Odense last year, and with him in goal, Aalesund sport the third-best defense in the Norwegian top flight this season, with only 19 goals conceded in 18 matches. Thanks to that sound defense, Aalesund are fourth in the Tippeligaen and only four points behind second-placed Valerenga a little more than halfway through the season, after finishing 13th in the 16-team league last season.

Aalesund director Henrik Hoff, in comments to Norwegian media sources, confirmed United’s interest, but he also stated that Lindegaard won’t be sold on the cheap.

“Manchester United have not been in contact with us directly, but I can confirm that there is an interest.”

“There is no smoke without fire.

“In case a big club like Manchester United show interest in our players, we are ready to negotiate.

“But Anders Lindegaard is in my eyes the best keeper in the Tippeliga and if he should be sold, a big sum will be required.”

Stoke City considering move for Manchester City flop Santa Cruz

In an effort to add some scoring punch before the start of their third Premier League campaign, Stoke City could make a move for out of favor Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz, according to the Guardian.

After finishing an impressive 12th in their inaugural Premier League campaign in the 2008/09 season, Tony Pulis’ side improved upon that last season by finishing 11th. This finish came in spite of the Potters scoring only 34 goals all season, with only Wolves (32) scoring fewer.

Thus far this summer, Stoke City have been linked with moves for West Ham’s Carlton Cole and Wigan’s Hugo Rodallega, and given their interest in both of those highly-rated strikers, they could afford to splash the cash on Santa Cruz, who, according to the report, would likely be available for less than half of the nearly 18m that City spent when they bought him from Blackburn last summer.

After scoring 19 goals in his debut campaign at Blackburn in the 2007/08 season, the last two seasons haven’t gone well for Santa Cruz. He scored only four league goals in an injury-plagued 2008/09 season, and in his first season at Eastlands, started only six league matches and scored only three goals.

Given his struggles over the last couple of seasons, there’d be some risk involved in making a move for Santa Cruz. However, with the chance to start regularly and rediscover his form, the Paraguayan could be just the man to help Stoke City make a move into the top half of the table this season.

Mark Hughes Set For Fulham, But Will ‘Second Choice Sparky’ Keep Up The Good Work?

After a brief but ultimately fruitless dalliance with Ajax manager Martin Jol, it would now appear that Fulham are within hours of appointing Mark Hughes as their new manager, with many reports suggesting that he could be unveiled at Craven Cottage as early as this afternoon.

It is thought that Hughes has already accepted chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed’s contract offer, and is currently travelling to London from his home in Cheshire before being formally presented to the media either later this evening or first thing tomorrow.

Fulham have understandably taken their time in appointing an able  successor to previous incumbent Roy Hodgson (who left to join Liverpool at the turn of the month) after enjoying a season of unprecedented success under his stewardship last term.

Hodgson’s close-knit side enjoyed a glorious run in last season’s Europa League, a resolute campaign that saw them advance past European footballing luminaries such as Roma, Juventus and reigning champions Shakhtar Donetsk, before narrowly losing out to Atletico Madrid during extra-time in the final.

Their showing on the domestic front was more solid than spectacular but a 12th place Premier League finish is far from derisory, especially once you take into account the inevitable physical toll that the rigours of a prolonged European run must have taken on what was essentially a very thin squad.

Fulham triumph over Juventus

As a result of the club’s various exertions and laudable over-achievements last season, the level of expectation at Craven Cottage has inescapably risen – but the loss of their veteran manager, the man at the hub of the success, served to deflate that buoyant optimism almost immediately.

Supporters of any club tend to demand a certain degree of visible progress in order to sate their perpetually simmering frustrations and the loss of Hodgson to Liverpool therefore naturally represented a step backward for the Fulham faithful.

There was no bad blood and no acrimony between the two parties, but to see the architect of the club’s fledgling gestalt pulled from the heart of proceedings must have been a decidedly bitter pill to swallow for everybody involved including, I suspect, Hodgson himself.

So here we are, a month down the line and a new name (almost) installed at the helm. He may have been many of their second choice, but the appointment of ‘Sparky’ is still being greeted with a distinct air of positivity by many of the Fulham contingent.

During his spells in charge at Blackburn and Manchester City, Hughes proved himself to be a stern operator of sorts.

He demonstrated the disdain in which he holds players with overly-precious egos on numerous occasions by refusing to pander to their various whims (his willingness to drop wayward Brazilian winger Robinho being a prime example) and developed a sturdy, if not a little limited, tactical system which proved (especially at Blackburn) to be considerably difficult to play against.

These two simple factors seem to bode well for his immediate future, as it isn’t particularly difficult to foresee how both elements will integrate into the current set-up at Fulham – a team that is often lauded for it’s lack of conceit and it’s propensity to work like dogs for one-another.

Philippe Senderos

Fulham new-boy Philippe Senderos

With Fulham’s only summer acquisitions made so far being erstwhile (to put it politely) centre-back Philippe Senderos from Arsenal and Jonathan Greening (who spent last year on loan at Craven Cottage anyway) from West Brom, Hughes is going to have to work diligently during the remainder of the transfer window in order to bolster his squad with the kind of players that can seriously aid the club consolidate it’s position – and not just ‘make up the numbers’.

However, I believe that the biggest challenge Hughes will face is to balance the remnants of the club’s burgeoning ambition that blossomed under Hodgson, with the reality that Fulham are still a mid-table club with a mid-table squad – regardless of the feats that may have gone before.

Liverpool coach Roy Hudgson has confirmed that Javier Mascherano has made it “perfectly clear” that he wants to leave the club. The Argentine has been strongly linked with a move to treble winners Inter Milan to link up with former Reds coach Rafa Benitez.

Speaking at the press conference, Hudgson said that Macherano wishes to leave, but there is still a glimmer of hope of keeping him at Anfield:

“Yes he wants to leave the club, he’s made that perfectly clear.”

“I think he wanted to leave a year ago and he wants to leave now as well. But, he is contracted to Liverpool club so whether he leaves will be our decision.”

“At the moment he’s a Liverpool player, he’ll be expected to be a Liverpool player and will be treated like a Liverpool player until such a day arrives when he no longer is.”

“The mere fact a player is a little bit unhappy with his situation and would prefer to leave doesn’t necessarily mean that he will.”

“Yes it disappoints me but it’s not unusual. In every football club all through the Premier League and the world there’ll be players in the team who want to leave.”

“Some are allowed to, some are not allowed to. That’s the situation.”

“Mascherano is a Liverpool player and has a two-year contract. I expect him to honor that contract until the day comes when the club decide to accept an offer for his services.”

Manchester United chief David Gill: Ferguson has the money to spend on transfers

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has confirmed that Sir Alex Ferguson has all the money he needs should he plan on bringing a player to Old Trafford this summer.

The Red Devils have already spent some £20 million on Chris Smalling from Fulham and Javier Hernandez from Guadalajara but the two youngsters are likely to be back-up in their first season in the Theater Of Dreams.

Manchester United supporters world-wide have been frustrated at the lack of star signings following the record-breaking move of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, with players like Mezut Oezil and Luis Fabiano being linked with a move to the Premier League runners-up.

However, Gill insists Sir Alex has the money to spend should he be interested in a player.

He told The Manchester Evening News:

“The money is there if we believe there is a player who can improve what we believe is a very good squad.”

“The team has been together for a number of years and done very well. In order to improve it a player has to be of a very high quality.”

Gill did not confirm who is on the Manchester United radar but says that United are searching the whole world, all year long looking for the latest talents in world football.

He added:

“We are always looking at players. We are looking 365 days a year – it doesn’t just start when the transfer window opens.”

“We are looking at it. We studied a lot of players at the World Cup, but we knew about a lot of them before that.”

“Over all I think Sir Alex is very comfortable with the squad composition. That’s not to say something won’t happen, but I think it is a ‘might’, not a ‘will’.”

“We will see what happens over the next six weeks.”
