Netherlands 0-1 Spain
2010 FIFA World Cup
11 July 2010

It was a match where Spain would have most of the possession and would ultimately win the match in extra time.

The Netherlands would have several good chances on the counterattack but failed to finish them. Arjen Robben had two very good chances but each time he couldn’t finish and that proved to be the defense. Despite Spain having more possession in the first 90 minutes, they didn’t have many clear chances and the Netherlands defense was able to remain disciplined.

As the match would head into extra time, the fatigue on the Netherlands started to show as they would play with 10 men for the final minutes. John Heitinga was given a red card for his second yellow in the 109th minute. Spain continued to control the match and would find the breakthrough in the 116th minute. It was a result of good passing from Spain and poor defense from the Dutch. An initial cross wasn’t cleared by the Dutch defense and Spain took advantage. Iniesta received a pass into the box and would score to make it 0-1.

The Netherlands will be disappointed as they had chances. Spain didn’t play the greatest match but proved to be the best team in the tournament.

Uruguay 2-3 Germany
2010 FIFA World Cup
10 July 2010

Germany would once again finish third in a World Cup as they defeated Uruguay 3-2.

It was a match that would go back and forth as Uruguay had a 2-1 lead in the second half. Germany would have more possession and chances but some poor goalkeeper from Uruguay was the difference.

The Germans would take the lead in the 19th minute as Thomas Muller would score off a rebound from a long range shot. It was a shot the goalkeeper should have caught but didn’t and Muller capitalized. Uruguay would level the match in the 28th minute as they caught Germany with a quick counterattack. Cavani would receive a pass and then finish from inside the box to make it 1-1.

In the second half, Uruguay would once again get a great goal from Diego Forlan. He received a cross just inside the box and volley it past the goalkeeper. It was a great finish but wouldn’t be enough for the win. Germany would capitalize on the defensive errors with goals from Marcelle Jansen in the 56th minute and Sami Khedira in the 82nd minute.

Jansen’s goal was a header from a cross that the goalkeeper tried to punch out of play but missed. The Khedira goal was a corner kick that the defense failed to clear and eventually he headed it from inside the box into the back of the net. It proved to be the match winning goal for Germany.

Germany 0-1 Spain
2010 FIFA World Cup
7 July 2010

Spain would move into their first ever FIFA World Cup final with a 1-0 win over Germany. The score was the same as the 2008 Euro Final but this time it was Carlos Puyol who would score the winning goal.

The opening match didn’t have many chances for either side as the Germans were compact and Spain couldn’t convert their possession into any goals.

In the second half, the match would open up a bit as both teams looked for a goal. Spain had more possession throughout the match and would start to get some decent chances as the match continued. Finally, in the 73rd minute, Spain would grab the lead with a header from Puyol from a corner kick. It was a great header as Puyol ran from the edge of the box and connected to give Spain a 1-0 lead.

Germany was unable to make a comeback in the final minutes and will once again play for third place. Spain will face the Netherlands in the final on Sunday. Neither team has won the World Cup before and its the first final ever for Spain.

Football Headshots

Headshot is a lethal blow to the head killing your opponent in one shot in real world and video games alike. When it comes to football, headshots don’t cause causalities but it does have the same reaction from the one at the receiving end: falling flat on the ground.

Funny to look at, yes but those who have been ‘fortunate’ enough to be hit by a football in the face, know that your world goes round and round and before you know it, you’re on the ground with a bunch of players standing around you.

Listed here are few of the ‘lethal’ football headshots (the most famous ones, that we’ve all seen, have been excluded):
