Mark Hughes Set For Fulham, But Will ‘Second Choice Sparky’ Keep Up The Good Work?

championsleague Mark Hughes Set For Fulham, But Will Second Choice Sparky Keep Up The Good Work?acmilan Mark Hughes Set For Fulham, But Will Second Choice Sparky Keep Up The Good Work?

After a brief but ultimately fruitless dalliance with Ajax manager Martin Jol, it would now appear that Fulham are within hours of appointing Mark Hughes as their new manager, with many reports suggesting that he could be unveiled at Craven Cottage as early as this afternoon.

It is thought that Hughes has already accepted chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed’s contract offer, and is currently travelling to London from his home in Cheshire before being formally presented to the media either later this evening or first thing tomorrow.

Fulham have understandably taken their time in appointing an able  successor to previous incumbent Roy Hodgson (who left to join Liverpool at the turn of the month) after enjoying a season of unprecedented success under his stewardship last term.

Hodgson’s close-knit side enjoyed a glorious run in last season’s Europa League, a resolute campaign that saw them advance past European footballing luminaries such as Roma, Juventus and reigning champions Shakhtar Donetsk, before narrowly losing out to Atletico Madrid during extra-time in the final.

Their showing on the domestic front was more solid than spectacular but a 12th place Premier League finish is far from derisory, especially once you take into account the inevitable physical toll that the rigours of a prolonged European run must have taken on what was essentially a very thin squad.

Fulham triumph over Juventus in last season's Europa League

Fulham triumph over Juventus

As a result of the club’s various exertions and laudable over-achievements last season, the level of expectation at Craven Cottage has inescapably risen – but the loss of their veteran manager, the man at the hub of the success, served to deflate that buoyant optimism almost immediately.

Supporters of any club tend to demand a certain degree of visible progress in order to sate their perpetually simmering frustrations and the loss of Hodgson to Liverpool therefore naturally represented a step backward for the Fulham faithful.

There was no bad blood and no acrimony between the two parties, but to see the architect of the club’s fledgling gestalt pulled from the heart of proceedings must have been a decidedly bitter pill to swallow for everybody involved including, I suspect, Hodgson himself.

Robinho and Mark Hughes at Man City

Robinho and Mark Hughes at Man City

So here we are, a month down the line and a new name (almost) installed at the helm. He may have been many of their second choice, but the appointment of ‘Sparky’ is still being greeted with a distinct air of positivity by many of the Fulham contingent.

During his spells in charge at Blackburn and Manchester City, Hughes proved himself to be a stern operator of sorts.

He demonstrated the disdain in which he holds players with overly-precious egos on numerous occasions by refusing to pander to their various whims (his willingness to drop wayward Brazilian winger Robinho being a prime example) and developed a sturdy, if not a little limited, tactical system which proved (especially at Blackburn) to be considerably difficult to play against.

These two simple factors seem to bode well for his immediate future, as it isn’t particularly difficult to foresee how both elements will integrate into the current set-up at Fulham – a team that is often lauded for it’s lack of conceit and it’s propensity to work like dogs for one-another.

Philippe Senderos

Fulham new-boy Philippe Senderos

With Fulham’s only summer acquisitions made so far being erstwhile (to put it politely) centre-back Philippe Senderos from Arsenal and Jonathan Greening (who spent last year on loan at Craven Cottage anyway) from West Brom, Hughes is going to have to work diligently during the remainder of the transfer window in order to bolster his squad with the kind of players that can seriously aid the club consolidate it’s position – and not just ‘make up the numbers’.

However, I believe that the biggest challenge Hughes will face is to balance the remnants of the club’s burgeoning ambition that blossomed under Hodgson, with the reality that Fulham are still a mid-table club with a mid-table squad – regardless of the feats that may have gone before.

Chelsea Go To 50m For Torres?

According to the Mirror, Chelsea have made a £50m bid for Fernando Torres, after having an initial bid of 40m knocked back by Liverpool.

Analysis: If I said £40m was something that Liverpool should consider, I’m going to say the same thing about £50m. As valuable as Torres is when he’s fit and in form, he has his price, especially when it appears that luck is now not on his side when it comes to injuries.

City Agree Kolarov Deal

Manchester City have signed Lazio left back Aleksandar Kolarov for £17m. The Serbia international has penned a four-year deal worth £80k per week. (The Mirror)

Analysis: So where will Wayne Bridge end up? Chelsea could be looking for a new left back soon, but, er, yeah, never mind on two fronts.

Liverpool Leave It Late For Remy

West Ham might have been confident about their chances to land Nice striker Loic Remy, but it appears he‘s bound for Merseyside now. Liverpool have agreed a fee of around £12.5m for the 23-year-old, who is set to undergo a medical tomorrow ahead of officially completing his move. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Shame for West Ham, but Liverpool had the bid that was closer to Nice’s asking price of £13m.

Villa In For Djalo

Aston Villa are interested in Sporting Lisbon striker Yannick Djalo and could make a €5m bid. However, Sporting are looking for €7m for the 24-year-old. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: He’s not very tall, but he’s got strength and pace, so he could well hold his own against some of the Premier League’s burlier defenders. And he also has this. Perfect fit for the English game, I say.

Blues Turn To Dembele

Birmingham City could make a move for AZ Alkmaar striker Moussa Dembele, who is available for £5m. (The Guardian)

Analysis: Dembele was linked with the likes of Chelsea last summer after helping AZ win the Eredivisie title in the 2008/09 season, but his stock has obviously taken a dip after a disappointing campaign for player (only four league goals in 29 appearances) last season. All the better for Birmingham, as the 23-year-old is a player with a great deal of promise.

West Ham Land Piquionne

West Ham have signed striker Frederic Piquionne from Lyon for £1m. The veteran striker, who spent last season on loan at Portsmouth, has signed a three-year deal worth £40k per week. (The Sun)

Analysis: They may be missing out on Remy, but they will be getting one solid French striker. Piquionne acquitted himself quite well in the Premier League last season, and in a better situation and with more talent around him, he should do very well at West Ham.

Spain

Barca Snatch Sevilla Star

Barcelona have signed Sevilla star Adriano. Barcelona will pay €9.5m up front, and they could wind up paying a total of €13.5m. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Adriano was a key player for Sevilla all throughout his five and a half seasons at the club, and with his versatility, ability experience, and relative youth (he‘s still only 25), Barcelona could be netting a real bargain. They might not be landing Cesc and Mascherano this summer, but they’re not getting scrubs by any means.

Real Sign Leon

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Getafe winger Pedro Leon. Real will reportedly pay around €10m for the 23-year-old, who has signed a six-year deal with his new club. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Will he wind up back at Getafe as soon as he left, or does he stand a legitimate chance of finding a place in Jose Mourinho’s squad. It won’t be easy to do the latter, but he certainly has the ability and potential to.

Sevilla In Cigarini Talks

Sevilla are in advanced discussions with Napoli for midfielder Luca Cigarini, according to the player‘s agent. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Napoli may well be giving up on Cigarini a little quickly, considering he’s been at the club for only a year and at 23, hasn’t nearly reached his full potential yet. Loaning him out for a season to see how he develops might be a better idea than selling him outright, but we’ll see what kind of deal transpires.

Italy

Ronaldinho Staying In Milan

After it appeared that Ronaldinho was on the verge of a move to Flamengo, it looks like the former Barcelona star is now staying at AC Milan, as confirmed by club exec Adriano Galliani. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: As he should. Ronaldinho is coming off of his best season in a little while, and he’ll be a very important part of AC Milan’s hopes of doing more than just battling for a Champions League place and exiting the Champions League in the round of 16 again.

Udinese Near Denis Deal

Udinese are set to complete the signing of Napoli striker German Denis within the next few days. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Denis made only 16 starts last season and stood to fall even further down the pecking order with the arrival of Edinson Cavani from Palermo. Udinese signed a couple of forwards for the future this summer, but landing Denis fills the need for someone to be a third scoring option up front to go with Antonio’s Di Natale and Floro Flores.

Germany

Wolfsburg Sign Mandzukic

VfL Wolfsburg have signed Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic from Dinamo Zagreb for €8m. The 24-year-old had also been linked with Aston Villa. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Mandzukic has been one of the leading scorers in the Croatian top flight in each of the last four seasons, and a move to a top league was only a matter of time. Does this mean that Steve McClaren is preparing for life after Edin Dzeko? No, considering that this might be more of a replacement for Obafemi Martins than for Dzeko.

Hannover Interested In Nemeth

Hannover 96 manager Mirko Slomka has stated his interest in young Liverpool striker Krisztian Nemeth. The Hungarian hitman is also drawing interest from newly-promoted Serie A side Lecce, who have made a £1m bid. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Nemeth has star potential, but he hasn’t yet made his first-team debut for Liverpool, and injuries have disrupted loan spells at Blackpool and AEK Athens in the last couple of seasons. For the sake of his development, he needs to move somewhere he can earn regular first-team football, and Hannover, who are in need of extra firepower, would offer that.

Russia

Zenit Move For Alves?

Zenit St. Petersburg are looking to thrash out a £12.5m deal for Porto defender Bruno Alves as quickly as possible to prevent Manchester United from making a move for the 28-year-old. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: With speculation about Nemanja Vidic’s future once again starting up, United could be in the market for a new center back, so don’t be surprised to see United steal in and snatch him late like they’ve done with many others before.

Scotland

Celtic Close On Murphy

Celtic have signed striker Daryl Murphy from Sunderland. The 27-year-old has signed a three-year deal with his new club. (The Mirror)

Analysis: After helping Sunderland earn promotion back to the Premier League in the 2006/07 season, he didn’t produce much over the last few seasons and fell a ways down the pecking order. But he had a solid loan spell at Ipswich Town last season, and at the very least, he should provide quality depth for Neil Lennon’s side.

Manchester Move For Ibrahimovic?

The agent of Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to meet next week with officials from Manchester United and Manchester City. (Goal.com)

Analysis: It’d seem that the only way United would be able to work a deal out for him is if he significantly dropped his wage demands or if United went well above their current wage structure, neither of which I see happening. One can never say never, otherwise they wouldn’t be meeting with his agent, but I’d have to say that he’s bound for City or AC Milan.

United Target Not For Sale

Udinese president Giampaolo Pozzo says that winger Alexis Sanchez, who is a target of Manchester United and Roma, is not for sale this summer. (The Mirror)

Analysis: Sanchez made a big step from his first season at Udinese to his second, and he’ll be a big part of Udinese’s hopes to get back into Europe after last season’s surprising 15th place finish. If he continues his progress, I fully expect him to make a move next summer.

Fulham Want Fair Fee For Schwarzer

Arsenal have offered £2m for Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer, but that’s not going to cut it, as the Cottagers are looking for £4m for the experienced shot-stopper. (The Sun)

Analysis: 4m for a 37-year-old keeper might be considered a bit much, but given how long he’s been one of the best in the business, his importance to Fulham, and the fact that he still has plenty left in the tank, 4m isn’t really that much at all.

‘Pool Eye Park

According to the Sun, Liverpool are set to make a £6m bid for Monaco and South Korea star Park Chu-Young.

Analysis: Now, his numbers at Monaco might not blow you away, but there’s no doubt that he has the talent to be the next Korean success in the Premier League.

Birmingham Back For Babel

The Daily Star reports that Birmingham have rekindled their interest in Liverpool’s Ryan Babel, with an £8m bid set to be made soon.

Analysis: Roy Hodgson is still very much evaluating who he wants to keep and who he doesn’t, so he might yet decide that Babel still has a future at Liverpool. But with no guarantees as to how much Babel will figure into his plans, the need to raise funds for strengthening the squad, and an all-too-willing buyer in Birmingham, perhaps there will be less bumps in the road with this move this time around.

Fresh Sunderland Bid For Valdez

Sunderland have made a second bid for Borussia Dortmund striker Nelson Valdez. The 26-year-old, who started four of Paraguay‘s five World Cup games, is also receiving interest from PSV Eindhoven, among others. (The Mirror)

Analysis: If there is a Paraguayan striker that plays for Borussia Dortmund that Sunderland should be after, it’s Lucas Barrios, but he might be out of their price range.

Keinan Set For Blackpool

Israeli defender Dekel Keinan is set to undergo a medical ahead of signing a two-year deal with Blackpool. The 26-year-old recently had a trial with the newly promoted club, and he‘s set to become their first new acquisition of the summer. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: We’ll see how prominently he figures into Ian Holloway’s plans, but he has a great deal of experience on club and international level, including experience in Israel’s 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign and in the Champions League last season with Maccabi Haifa, which will prove valuable.

Italy

Milan Target Podolski

AC Milan executive Adriano Galliani says that the club could move for German forward Lukas Podolski, but it‘ll happen only if Klaas-Jan Huntelaar leaves the club this summer. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Considering Podolski’s propensity for profligacy on the club level in recent seasons, perhaps AC Milan might as well keep Huntelaar instead of giving Cologne a friendly cash injection.

Cavani Set For Napoli

Napoli have reportedly reached an agreement for Palermo striker Edinson Cavani. Napoli will take the Uruguayan on loan for the upcoming season and then pay €16m next summer to make the deal permanent. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Well, there are certainly no excuses for Napoli not making a serious push for a Champions League place (at the very least) and going deep in the Europa League. Defensively, they should be solid once again, but with one of the most dangerous front lines in Serie A, with Cavani, Lavezzi, and Quagliarella, we should see a lot fewer 0-0 and 1-1 draws (11 of those last season).

Germany

Bayern In For Van Der Wiel

Bayern Munich have made an approach for Ajax right back Gregory Van der Wiel, who‘s coming off of an impressive World Cup showing in the Netherlands‘ run to the final. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: This will only serve to increase speculation about the future of Philipp Lahm, who stands a good chance of leaving Bayern this summer, with Manchester United once again interested in him.

Surprise Contender For Campbell?

Newly promoted Bundesliga side St. Pauli have offered defender Sol Campbell a one-year deal worth €90k (£75k) per week. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Well, I don’t see this one as being too likely to come to anything, though it’s certainly worth it to take a shot. Not a bad offer monetarily at all, and it wouldn’t tie him to the club even if they immediately go back down, but I imagine he wouldn’t want to jump into a relegation battle at this point in his career.

Wolfsburg Loan Cicero

Wolfsburg have signed Brazilian midfielder Cicero on loan. Cicero spent the last two seasons at Hertha Berlin, starting 61 games and scoring 10 goals and assisting on nine more. (ESPN Soccernet)

Analysis: Another solid signing for Wolfsburg. Cicero has been a quality performer in the Bundesliga over the last couple of seasons, and he was one of the bright spots in a dismal campaign for Hertha Berlin last season. He should step in and be an impact player from the outset for Wolfsburg.

Scotland

Rangers Swoop In For Eagles

Rangers have made an approach for Burnley winger Chris Eagles. The former Manchester United starlet scored two goals and assisted on three more in 20 Premier League starts last season. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: With Eagles out of contract next summer and not a sure thing to remain at Burnley past the end of that deal, it’s best to cash in now and at least get something back for him. And with Burnley back in the Championship after a Premier League season in which Eagles yo-yoed in and out of the starting lineup, the timing isn‘t bad.

USA

Henry Seals MLS Move

Thierry Henry has officially completed his move to Major League Soccer, as the New York Red Bulls have confirmed that they’ve signed the veteran striker to a multi-year deal. (ESPN Soccernet)

Analysis: Isn’t it only fitting that, given his longtime ties to Arsenal, that he’ll be making his debut in a friendly against Tottenham?

Transfer Rumors: German wiz Ozil admires Premier League, Manchester City land Barcelona’s Toure, and more

While Brazil’s shocking defeat to Holland and Uruguay’s dramatic win over Ghana in the first two World Cup quarterfinal ties rightfully dominated the football headlines yesterday, there was plenty of wheelin’ and dealin’ going on thousands of miles away.

In the span of a couple of days, Manchester City have kicked their spending spree into high gear, and we can expect much more from City in the coming weeks. However, they’re not the only club with money to spend, and it appears that even West Ham are trying to get in on the action, with their pursuit of two young strikers who will cost a couple of pretty pennies.

England

Ozil Interested In Premier League Move?

In reports in the Sun, Werder Bremen and Germany star Mesut Ozil is noncommittal about his future, but he did speak very highly of the Premier League and of Manchester United and Chelsea in particular.

Analysis: With just one year left on his contract with Werder Bremen, it’s a high, high likelihood that Ozil will be on the move not long after he returns from the World Cup. He’s added a few million to his valuation with his performances in the World Cup, but that won’t be a problem for whoever lands him, as he is certainly well worth it.

City Land Toure And Kolarov

Friday was a day of double delights for Manchester City. They clinched their biggest signing of the summer thus far, completing a long-awaited and anticipated £28m deal for Barcelona’s Yaya Toure, who will join brother Kolo at Eastlands. (Daily Mail)

And on top of that good news, City have also beaten Real Madrid to the signature of Lazio star Aleksandar Kolarov, with the £15m deal expected to be finalized within the next couple of days. (Daily Mail)

Yossi Says Yes To Chelsea

Chelsea have wrapped up a £5.5m deal for Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun. The 30-year-old has penned a three-year deal with the Blues. (The Sun)

Analysis: He may not have been a regular starter for Liverpool, but he came up big on several occasions throughout his three seasons there, and I see him having much of the same impact at Chelsea.

Stipe Set For Spurs

Not R.E.M. frontman Michael, but Spartak Moscow goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa, who looks set to arrive at White Hart Lane on loan within the next couple of weeks. The 31-year-old has 81 caps for Croatia. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Given that Tottenham had to deal with injuries to both Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini last season, it’s a smart idea for Harry Redknapp to snap up another experienced, quality keeper just in case, because Ben Alnwick still isn’t quite ready to be called upon when it comes to say, a Champions League tie or a crucial Premier League match.

West Ham Persist With Neymar, Remy

After having a bid of £12m rejected by Santos, West Ham are set to go back in with an improved offer of £16m for young Brazilian striker Neymar. However, Santos sporting director Luiz Nunez Pedro Conceicao insists that the 18-year-old hotshot is not for sale. (The Mirror)

Analysis: They don’t have the funds to make Santos blink (unless they wanted to give up a significant chunk of their transfer budget, if not all of it entirely).

West Ham have also made an improved bid of £11.1m (13.5m) for Nice striker Loic Remy, according to Sky Sports.

Analysis: Remy’s a far more realistic target than Neymar, and they might well have a free run at him, as Arsenal and Lyon, who are two of the clubs that have been linked with Remy, have both signed new strikers already. £11m+ might appear to be a lot for a club who didn’t stave off relegation by much last season, but investments have to be made to minimize the chances of that repeating itself.

Sunderland Land Egypt Star

Sunderland have snapped up a longtime target in Egyptian sensation Ahmed Al-Muhammadi, who arrives from Egyptian side ENPPI on a season-long loan deal that includes an option for a £2m permanent move. The 22-year-old right-sided player has the ability to slot as a defender, a midfielder, or a winger. (FiliGoal)

Analysis:

English Interest For Beasley

American midfielder DaMarcus Beasley is reportedly receiving interest from Blackpool, West Brom, and Nottingham Forest. The 28-year-old is available for free after the end of his contract with Rangers. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Beasley is no stranger to English football, having had a loan stint at Manchester City in the 2006/07 season in which he scored four goals in 22 appearances (13 starts). He’s still only 28, and he’s got the quality to succeed at a high level, but it’s all a matter of whether or not he can stay healthy.

Italy

Juve Turned Back For Riera

Juventus have had a £5m bid for Spanish winger Albert Riera rejected by Liverpool. Riera made only 16 appearances (12 starts) last season, and after openly criticizing Rafa Benitez, didn’t make another appearance after March 11. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Perhaps Riera might be more inclined to stay after the managerial change, but he’s not on Liverpool’s list of must-haves. Riera didn’t quite do very much to prove that he was worth Liverpool’s £8m investment in him, but it appears they’re looking to recoup most, if not all, of it. It shouldn’t be a problem for Juventus to tack on another £1m or £2m.

More Italian Interest For Dempsey

After being the subject of interest from Napoli, Fulham attacker Clint Dempsey is now a target for Juventus. Dempsey eliminated Juve from last season’s Europa League, as his stunning winner capped off an incredible Fulham comeback in the second leg of their round of 16 tie. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: It may not seem like much in comparison to many others, but it’s a sign of the progression of American soccer that Dempsey and Landon Donovan have garnered the kind of interest they have post-World Cup. We’ll see if that interest leads to anything concrete, but given what Juve saw first hand from Dempsey, they certainly can’t go wrong by adding him to their ranks.

Germany

Wolfsburg Land Freidrich

Wolfsburg have signed defender Arne Friedrich from Hertha Berlin for a fee reported to be €2m. The 31-year-old, who has started each of Germany’s four World Cup matches thus far and has 76 caps for his country, has penned a three-year deal with Wolfsburg after being at Hertha since 2002. (ESPN Soccernet)

Analysis: Wolfsburg had one of the leakiest defenses in the Bundesliga last season, surrendering 58 goals in 34 matches (including 39 in 17 home matches), and the signing of the experienced, reliable Friedrich will greatly improve their back line and help their hopes of bettering last season’s disappointing ninth-place finish.

Hoffer To Kaiserslautern

Napoli striker Erwin Hoffer is set to spend next season on loan at newly-promoted Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern. The 23-year-old, who has two goals in 16 caps for Austria, made only eight substitute appearances in his first season with Napoli after his summer move from Austria Vienna. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Kaiserslautern lost top scorer Erik Jendrisek to Schalke 04, but they’ve gone a long way in filling that void and perhaps actually improving their front line by signing Hoffer, who scored 27 goals for Rapid Vienna in the 2008/09 season, and Bulgarian striker Ilyan Mitsanski, who was the second leading scorer in the Polish top flight last season.

Donovan May Prosper, but Dempsey More Deserving?

los angeles galaxy logo Donovan May Prosper, but Dempsey More Deserving? soccerlens logo Donovan May Prosper, but Dempsey More Deserving?

It has been almost a week since the United States was eliminated from the World Cup at the hands of Ghana. Although they carried aspirations of advancing deep into the knockout stages, their journey should be considered a success. The team brought exposure to a game that is usually little more than an after thought in the sporting consciousness of America. The exposure could also prove lucrative for some on the US squad who may look to propel their club careers to the next level.

The most obvious benefactor is Landon Donovan. The American talisman scored three goals, including an extra-time winner against Algeria. At the age of 27 he is at the top of his game and his stock has never been higher in the eyes of the international football community. However, despite all the praise Donovan recieves as the heart and soul of Team USA , it may be one of his teammates who is more deserving of the attention.

That man is Clint Dempsey, the attacker who spent the majority of the tournament playing opposite Donovan in midfield. Although Donovan took the majority of America’s set pieces and acted as the focal point of the American attack, it was Dempsey who routinely flew through the air on the receiving end and wreaked havoc in the box. His toughness and resilience was on full display throughout the tournament, but it is his resume on the international club scene that seperates Dempsey from his fellow countrymen.

The Texas-native began his club career domestically with the New England Revolution of the MLS, where he would collect both Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honours during his three year stay. In December of 2006, Dempsey became the highest-paid American transferred overseas when signed on with Fulham of the English Premier League.

Although Dempsey’s career in West London began slowly, it has blossomed recently, seeing him tally 8 and 9 goals in each of the last two domestic campaigns. He was also a major contributor to Fulham’s surprise run to the Europa League finals, which saw him break yet another barrier as the first American to play in a European final.

However, it is not trail-blazing nature that sets Clint Dempsey apart from Landon Donovan. The continuous improvement since landing in England (his goal totals have risen every year since his arrival), is something Donovan was unable to accomplish during an uneventful spell with Bayern Leverkusen in Germany. Dempsey also appears equally adept at elevating his play on the larger stages, as evidenced by his now-famous chip, to push Fulham past Italian power Juventus and into the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

However, despite barriers broken and highlights generated, Clint Dempsey still seems like a forgotten man. Perhaps it is a product of playing with a small Fulham club that gets lost behind its heavyweight London neighbours at Arsenal and Chelsea. Perhaps it is his lack of consistent dominance, but isn’t also difficult to capture without true offensive playmakers to feed off of?

All that is known is that as the summer transfer period continues, Clint Dempsey’s name remains absent from rumours. Only small rumblings of interest from Italian side Napoli and mere thoughts of reuniting with old boss Roy Hodgson at Liverpool exist. So as Landon Donovan gets set to enter the Premier League on a full-time basis, it is Clint Dempsey who will hope to continue elevating his standing in England’s top league, even if no one is watching.
