Manchester City and Inter Milan locked in Mario Balotelli talks

Former Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini could soon be reunited with one of his former players, if the price is right.

According to reports last night, talks are ongoing between Manchester City and Inter Milan over the sale of promising striker Mario Balotelli.

In speaking to Sky Sports 24, Inter president Massimo Moratti said of the discussions, “At this moment there are contacts with Manchester City, we must find an agreement that satisfies both us and them.”

Manchester City have reportedly offered almost £23m for the 19-year-old, but Inter are said to be looking for more than £30m for their prized prospect.

If the two sides are able to strike a deal, Balotelli would be reunited with Mancini, who handed the youngster his first-team debut against Cagliari in December 2007. Mancini would hand Balotelli seven league starts that season, and the then-17-year-old repaid the manager’s confidence by picking up three goals and three assists, along with notching braces against Reggina and Juventus in the Coppa Italia.

Balotelli, who has also been linked with Manchester United recently, had his share of issues in Jose Mourinho’s two seasons at the club, and there’s no question that he still has strides to make in regards to his maturity. However, there’s also no questioning his potential as a footballer, and perhaps a change of scenery and being under the guidance of a familiar face in Mancini could be just what Balotelli needs to become the player he can be.

At the least, he should be buoyed by Mancini’s praise and confidence in him, as stated yesterday in the City manager’s comments about transfers. Mancini said, “I do not think he has character problems.”

“When you are young, you make mistakes. That is true of all of us. I do not think he is a hard player to work with. I think he is a fantastic player.”

If City can land Balotelli, he’ll become their third big-money signing of the summer, and two more could soon follow, with City set to soon complete a deal for Lazio left back Aleksandar Kolarov and an improved offer likely forthcoming for Aston Villa midfielder James Milner.

Transfer Rumors: Liverpool land Joe Cole on four-year deal

England

Liverpool Sign Cole

Joe Cole finally has a new home, and it’s on Merseyside. The former Chelsea man has agreed a four-year deal with Liverpool, and he’s set to have a medical in the next 48 hours to put the finishing touches on his free transfer move. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: As I said yesterday, good, smart move for both sides. We could well look back on Liverpool’s moves for Cole and Milan Jovanovic as the bargain buys of the summer, even with Cole’s wages in mind.

City Close On Balotelli?

According to the Daily Mail (via Italian sources), Manchester City were set to arrive in Italy today to wrap up a £35m deal for Inter striker Mario Balotelli.

Analysis: All of this speculation over a player who shouldn’t go anywhere, much less for £35m right now. Even if it does come to pass, £35m would be more of an investment with the future and potential in mind, and given the question marks and uncertainties, would be an unwise investment at this point.

Arsenal To Bid For Jagielka?

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are ready to bid £18m for Everton defender Phil Jagielka. The Gunners have reportedly already seen a £14m bid rejected for the 27-year-old.

Analysis: There won’t be a repeat of the Joleon Lescott mess, safe to say. Firstly, Everton are unwilling, and secondly, it’d be a little outside of Arsenal’s usual spending procedures to throw down almost 30m on one position in any given summer. I expect to see Arsenal move for another center back even with Koscielny in the fold, but I see them looking more for someone to provide experience and quality depth, not someone like Jagielka.

Villa To Move For Keane?

The Daily Express says that Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne has urged manager Martin O’Neill to make a move for his international teammate Robbie Keane, and that the Villa boss could pounce when Tottenham return from their American tour.

Analysis: There’s been no shortage of speculation about Keane’s future, but one thing that is certain is that he’s not guaranteed a regular start at Tottenham, with Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch the preferred pairing.

Celtic would like to have him back, and they offer the potential of Champions League action, but affording a permanent deal is out of the question. Villa, however, can offer such a deal, along with regular starts and European football. Not to mention, they also need a proven finisher like Keane to enhance their hopes of being able to make a legitimate, prolonged run at the top four this season.

Birmingham Enter Riquelme Race

According to Sky Sports, Birmingham City are interested in signing Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquleme. The 32-year-old is available for free after the end of his contract with Boca Juniors.

Analysis: In the end, I think he’ll re-sign with Boca, but it would be nice to see him in the Premier League before he calls time on his career. He’d certainly liven things up for Birmingham, who have taken at least one step in the right direction towards being livelier and more productive in attack with the addition of Nikola Zigic up front.

Hammers Target Pens New Deal

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Graham Dorrans, who has been the subject of heavy interest from West Ham this summer, has committed his future to the Baggies by signing a new four-year deal. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: It was highly unlikely that he was going anywhere this summer, given his importance to the side, but knowing that they have their top creative presence settled and locked down will certainly be a boost to West Brom’s hopes of doing well this season.

Spain

Atletico Line Up Luis

Atletico Madrid are reportedly close to landing Deportivo La Coruna defender Filipe Luis for €12m. €6m of the €12m will be paid up front, with the other half paid in two installments of €3m. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Filipe would’ve been a factor in Brazil’s World Cup campaign if not for a horrific leg break in January, and that leg break also shows how important he was to Depor. They were 11-4-4 when he went down and in excellent position for a European spot. In the 17 games he missed, they went 2-11-4 and fell well out of the European places.

His sale will certainly hurt, but it will help with the club’s current financial issues. It’ll also help fill a priority for Atletico, whose defensive struggles last season have been documented before in this space.

Hercules In For Samaras

According to Celtic manager Neil Lennon, newly promoted La Liga side Hercules have put an offer in for striker Georgios Samaras. (The Guardian)

Analysis: Celtic just signed Daryl Murphy from Sunderland, but Celtic could do well to keep Samaras. He has had some real cold streaks (he scored only once in his last 17 appearances last season), but when he gets hot, he gets hot. If he can do that on a more regular basis, he’ll be a key part of Celtic being able to wrestle the SPL supremacy back from Rangers.

Italy

Acquafresca Set For Lazio

Lazio have come to an agreement with Genoa for striker Robert Acquafresca, and all that‘s left is for the capital city side to agree personal terms with the 22-year-old. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Last season was a real step back for Acquafresca, as he had an unsuccessful loan spell at Atalanta and netted only twice in 10 appearances after returning to Genoa in January. However, he’s proven his worth in Serie A at a young age, and hopefully his move to Lazio will see him rediscover the form he had during his two successful seasons at Cagliari.

Germany

Grafite To Leave Wolfsburg?

According to Sky Sports, VfL Wolfsburg could sell their second striker in the span of a week. Fenerbahce have reportedly made an offer for Grafite, and the report says that Wolfsburg are expected to make a decision about the Brazilian goal-getter this week.

Analysis: Grafite took a step back last season after his fantastic 2008/09 campaign, scoring only 11 league goals after netting 28 in leading Wolfsburg to a first-ever Bundesliga title. With that, his age, and new signing Marko Mandzukic in mind, a decent offer is worth seriously considering. His departure would leave Mandzukic and Edin Dzeko as the likely starting pairing, which could see highly-rated Swiss youngster Nassim Ben Khalifa thrown into the fire early on, short of Steve McClaren adding another experienced striker.

Ukraine

Shakhtar Near Eduardo Deal?

The Daily Mail says that Shakhtar Donetsk are on the verge of landing Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva in a £6m deal.

Analysis: A move where he can earn regular starts, regain his confidence, and rediscover his old form is what he needs, so this would be a good move for him. One can only hope and wish for the best for him.

Lahm Deal No Walk In The Park?

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United could make a move for Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm, but any deal could hinge on whether or not United are willing to part with Park Ji-Sung, who is wanted by Bayern.

Analysis: With Bayern in pursuit of Ajax’s Gregory Van der Wiel, Lahm could be United’s for the taking if they really want him. Park has been a dependable squad member and stepped up in big moments on numerous occasions, but as the second leg of United’s Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern last season showed, having some experience and steadiness at right back can be a real difference maker.

Sunderland Swoop For Manchester Starlets

Sunderland are hopeful of finalizing a deal for young Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck within the coming days, and the club could also be set for a move for Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Neither player looks to have a chance at many first-team opportunities at their respective clubs this coming season, so a move is in their best interests. Onuoha can be an immediate starter for Sunderland, Welbeck will greatly benefit from the chance to earn significant Premier League experience. And even if there’s a logjam at striker, Steve Bruce can find a place for him as a winger, so he should find opportunities there for the taking.

Birmingham Bid For Clyne

Birmingham City have made a bid of £1.25m for Crystal Palace right back Nathaniel Clyne. (The Sun)

Analysis: With Palace likely set for a battle to stay up this season, selling Clyne right now could be considered, given that being in League One wouldn’t do much for his value. However, he stands to have a lot more value to the club if he stays and helps their fight to stay up than if he leaves for what can be thought of as a rather small sum with his talent and potential in mind.

Wigan Loan Al-Habsi

Wigan have signed goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi on a season-long loan from Bolton. (The Sun)

Analysis: With the injury cloud always looming and ready to rain down on Chris Kirkland, it’s a smart move for Wigan to land another goalkeeper with Premier League experience. Al-Habsi performed well for Bolton in his extended spell of action in the 2007/08 season, and he could step in and do a job if needed.

Spain

Barcelona Target Bilbao Star

Barcelona are pondering a move for Atletico Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Martinez is one of the brightest prospects in Spanish football (which is saying a lot, considering the young talent they have), and he was a top target for Liverpool last summer. With Barca looking to meet frustration on the Cesc Fabregas front yet again, he makes for a fine backup option, but Barcelona’s financial situation could price them out of a move unless some sales can be made soon.

Aduriz Set For Valencia

Valencia have agreed a €4m fee for Mallorca striker Aritz Aduriz, who will underdog a medical at his prospective new home tomorrow. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: David Villa he is not, but he is a reliable scorer. Valencia will certainly miss Villa and Silva, but they will survive and flourish, thanks to old faces (Juan Mata, Joaquin, and Pablo) and newer ones. Alejandro Dominguez should be a significant contributor in his first full season at the club after coming from Rubin Kazan in January, and Aduriz and fellow new signing Alberto Costa will also do their part to make sure that the two Davids aren’t missed too much.

Atletico Eye Godin

Atletico Madrid are interested in Villarreal center back Diego Godin, who‘s coming off of an impressive World Cup performance for Uruguay. Villarreal could sell the 24-year-old if an offer around €15m comes in. (Goal.com)

Analysis: If there’s any area that Atletico need to spend big, it’s at the back. The addition of Godin wouldn’t be a cure-all for their defensive woes, but it would significantly boost their hopes of having an all-around successful 2010-11 campaign.

Italy

Juve Enter Fray For Forlan

According to Italian news reports, Juventus could be set to make a €20m bid for Atletico Madrid star and World Cup Golden Ball winner Diego Forlan. (Goal.com)

Analysis: It makes a lot more sense for Juve to make a run at Forlan instead of Edin Dzeko with numerous factors in mind. The only negative when it comes to a Forlan deal is his age, but when you’re capable of reaching a goal total as high or higher than your age, well, it’s just a number.

Milan Agree Papastathopoulos Deal

AC Milan and Genoa have come to an agreement over Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos. AC Milan will have the 22-year-old on loan next season and then sign him permanently for €7m next summer. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Another much-needed step towards giving the squad a much younger look. Papastathopoulos (say it five times fast!) was a steady performer for a Genoa defense that was one of the worst in Serie A, and he has the potential to be a key cog in Milan’s back line for years to come.

Roma Look To Seal Burdisso Deal

After Inter Milan rejected their initial bid of €3.5m for defender Nicolas Burdisso, Roma are hopeful that an improved bid of €6m will be enough to land the Argentine international. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Inter may want €10m, but with Roma not having much room to maneuver in the transfer market right now, Inter shouldn’t find it hard to find a compromise over a player who Roma needs a lot more than they do at this point.

Fiorentina Close On Insua

Fiorentina have agreed a fee of £5m with Liverpool for left back Emiliano Insua. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Liverpool could’ve certainly benefited from having him in the side next season, but he should step in and be an immediate starter for Fiorentina.

How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mario Balotelli?

championsleague How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mario Balotelli?acmilan How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mario Balotelli?manchestercity How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mario Balotelli?

Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli is a child of our footballing times.

Like so many of the new breed of brattish ’starlets’, he is self-entitled, egotistical, petulant, immature, head-strong and existing on a financially skewed tangent of reality without any decisive measure of his burgeoning talents other than his ridiculously inflated salary.

However, unlike the overwhelming majority of his fledgling contemporaries, Balotelli certainly has the latent potential to just about carry his outwardly pugnacious personality off – for now, at least.

There will come a time in the not-so-distant future when the 19-year-old prodigy will have to start ‘delivering the goods’ on a consistent basis if he is to live up to the (mostly self-perpetuated) hype and, if the mounting speculation of a summer transfer to England is anything to go by, it would appear that it will not be the Nerazzurri that will witness the wild-child forward finally ‘bear fruit’.

Balotelli has seemingly opened the door to a move to the Premier League by fluttering his metaphorical eyelashes at both the Manchester clubs as well as reigning champions Chelsea, and all three have reciprocated with less-than-subtle overtures – with Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini going on record as saying that ‘if Inter decide to sell him, we will be there’ and his United and Chelsea counterparts both telling anyone who’d listen of their admiration for the striker.

JoseBalo1 300x221 How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mario Balotelli?

To describe Balotelli’s Inter career thus far as ‘tumultous’ is underselling it by quite a distance, but it hasn’t appeared to dilute the interests of his eager band of potential suitors – who are all reportedly willing to part with upwards of £30 million to secure his services for next season.

Under the stewardship of the now-departed Jose Mourinho he endured more disciplinary action than your average common-or-garden war criminal, mostly as a direct result of his overbearing petulance, and was excluded from first team proceedings on numerous occasions for his lapse (to put it politely) attitude to training…to his teammates…and to Mourinho himself…and to the Inter supporters…and to his opponents…etc, etc.

He has certainly alienated most, if not all, of the supposed allies that have offered forth the hand of friendship over the course of his tenure at the Giuseppe Meazza and it is precisely this repellent attitude that leads the impartial observer to wonder why anyone with any sense would part with such a ludicrous amount of money to procure such a consistently disruptive entity.

Mancini 300x225 How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mario Balotelli?

Not that the money matters much to the nouvelle riche pretenders at Manchester City, who are intent on building their dream team on shifting sands with a bottomless pit of money and a clutch of lofty commercial ambitions.

To them, the purchase of Balotelli would represent a significant milestone in their Arab-fueled progression to infinity.

Whereas last season a lot of Sheik Mansour’s spare change was frivolously frittered away on solid, proven (but never-the-less fairly unspectacular) Premier League performers like Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz in a bid to fill out their squad, the acquisition of the much-sought after Inter striker would prove that their multi-billion pound venture is slowly gathering pulling-power amongst the rest of the major European leagues.

Balotelli has been quoted this morning as saying that he regards City boss Roberto Mancini as ‘a really great coach’, but the fact that Mancini has little experience of competently handling a squad full of monumentally precious egos would suggest that he would not be able to succeed where Mourinho failed, and tame Super Mario’s wayward disposition sufficiently to see him flourish cogently at Eastlands.

SAF 300x187 How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mario Balotelli?

One man that does possess the necessary wherewithal is Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who has spent the best part of his career at Old Trafford successfully juggling the fortunes of prima donnas and work-horses alike – and is therefore widely regarded as the best man-manager currently operating in the game as a result.

The wily Scot is loathe to suffer fools gladly and has famously been perfectly willing to ditch dissenting voices by the wayside, regardless of their importance to his system or of their standing within the United community – a prominent personality trait that could either prove to be a huge source of inspiration to Balotelli or, of course, just another cause for friction.

Ferguson is seemingly the only manager in the global game that Jose Mourinho considers himself inferior to and for that reason alone it would seem that, if anyone can get the best out of our belligerent protagonist, it would be the veteran Scot.

Ancelotti 300x200 How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mario Balotelli?

With that said, I personally think that a move to Chelsea would benefit Balotelli the most, basically due to the formation that manager Carlo Ancelotti employs.

Their high-set three-pronged attacking line (headed by irreplaceable talisman Didier Drogba) would suit him down to the ground, and with only the deceptively ineffective Nicolas Anelka, the unproven Daniel Sturridge and the lightweight Saloman Kalou for competition, prolonged ‘game time’ (the commodity that all footballing super-ego’s seem to prize above all others…with the exception of money) is a much more realistic proposition.

The goal-scoring exploits of French winger Florent Malouda last season means that the berth on the left side of the Chelsea trident is most probably spoken for, but a first-choice front three of Malouda, Drogba and Balotelli would certainly be enough to strike fear into the hearts of even the stoutest of Premier League defenders.

Balo1 300x183 How Do You Solve A Problem Like Mario Balotelli?

In answer to the original question, I’m not entirely sure you can solve a problem like Mario Balotelli – assuming that you’re not a training psychologist.

Maybe his fractured upbringing has ingrained his persecution complex so steadfastly within his nature that he is destined for a career that is set in perpetual flux – moving on from failed prospect to failed prospect.

Or maybe, on an altogether more postive note,  he will eventually find a club in which he is granted the freedom to operate as he sees fit, i.e. on an as-and-when basis, although whether any of his prospective English employers would grant him that luxury remains to be seen.

Of course, only time will tell how Balotelli chooses to let his career pan out.

However, time – as they say – waits for no man.

Barcelona and Inter target Mascherano to force Liverpool’s hand with transfer request

championsleague Barcelona and Inter target Mascherano to force Liverpools hand with transfer requestliverpool Barcelona and Inter target Mascherano to force Liverpools hand with transfer requestsoccerlens logo Barcelona and Inter target Mascherano to force Liverpools hand with transfer request

Last summer, a move to Barcelona looked to be on for Javier Mascherano, but in the end, Liverpool held on to him. However, the longing to leave hasn’t passed, and it appears that Mascherano is now taking matters into his own hands.

According to the Daily Mail, the Argentine midfielder will submit a transfer request in order to force Liverpool to give in to his desires to leave the club for greener pastures, may it be his preferred destination of Barcelona or a reunion with Rafa Benitez at Inter Milan.

After last summer’s move that wasn‘t, Mascherano put aside his personal wishes for the cause and had yet another fine individual campaign in what was a disappointing season for the club.

However, it’s clear what he wants, and as much of a professional as he might be, and as much as he‘d give his all if he remained at Anfield, it‘s better for both parties to find a resolution as soon as possible without another drawn-out mess.

Mascherano admitted that missing out on his Barca move affected his mindset, and it’s safe to assume that the same thing could happen twofold if the situation plays out the same way again. As if there wasn’t already enough pressure on his shoulders, having to deal with unsettled and unhappy players is certainly the last thing Roy Hodgson would like to deal with when Liverpool, transitioning as they may be, can ill-afford a poor start to the new season.

But will he get his wish? It came out in the past week that Barcelona had to take out a loan to pay the players’ wages for last month, and even though that’s likely not something to panic about in the short or long term, you do have to wonder about their transfer budget.

Barcelona have already wrapped up the €40m purchase of David Villa, and the club looks to be stepping up its efforts to finally land Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas, who won’t come cheaply. Barca have raised nearly €50m with the sales of Yaya Toure and Dmytro Chygrynskiy, and a further €15m or so could be raised with the sales of defenders Rafa Marquez and Martin Caceres, who have both been linked with exits.

However, it would appear that they have to sell Zlatan Ibrahimovic to be able to seriously consider moves for both Fabregas and Mascherano. Manchester City have been heavily linked with Ibrahimovic, and any funds generated from that sale (and for that matter, offloading Ibrahimovic‘s wages as well) would make the double swoop all the more possible.

But if, for one reason or another, Barcelona are unable to make a move for Mascherano happen, Milan is just as suitable of a destination. Mascherano has a great relationship with Rafa Benitez, and there’s also a sizable Argentine contingent at Inter, so settling in won’t be a problem. Also, as much as Barcelona would be a natural fit for his family given the language situation, the amount of familiar faces in their new home would help his family be able to settle and fit in well in Milan.

Inter might not want to stump up what Liverpool might be looking for in a straight cash deal, but a cash plus player swap could be appealing to Roy Hogdson, so if Barcelona don’t move quickly, Rafa Benitez could waste no time in swooping in to do business with his former employers.

We’ll see how well Mascherano’s transfer request is received, but for the sake of both sides, it’s clear what needs to happen.
