Forbes’ inaugural SportsMoney 50-50 list (a system used to rank the 50 most valuable teams and the 50 most valuable athletes across all world sport) were announced yesterday and, whilst the individual standings were stacked heavily in favour of American sports stars (NBA players occupy 14 slots, NFL players 9), there are six footballers that feature in the top 50.

Despite his various recent infidelities, golfing icon Tiger Woods tops the list with an estimated annual income of over $100 million (thanks to his lucrative tie-ins with Nike and Gillette amongst others) with boxer Floyd Mayweather Jnr and basketball player Kobe Bryant making up the top three.

It should come as no surprise that topping the footballers’ standings (though only making fifth position in the list proper, one place behind golfer Phil Mickelson) is one David Beckham, who has become somewhat of a one-man global super-brand over the past decade of his career – raking in nearly $44 million in endorsements and salaries from high-profile companies such as Adidas and Yahoo!.

Here’s how the sextuplet of footballing superstars fared in comparison to one another…

1. David Beckham, LA Galaxy (5th on Forbes’ list)

Estimated income: $43.7 million (£28.6 million) / Age: 35

Beckham is currently overseeing the development of a range of underwear and fragrances that will bear his name, so we can expect his income to swell further over the next couple of years.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid (13th on Forbes’ list)

Estimated income: $35.8 million (£23.4 million) / Age: 25

Ronaldo is currently the world’s most expensive player having transferred from Manchester United to Real for $132 million, but the Portuguese forward did not receive a cut of the fee.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi

Barcelona's Lionel Messi

3. Lionel Messi, Barcelona (26th on Forbes’ list)

Estimated income: $27 million (£17.7 million) / Age: 23

Despite his relatively tender years, Barca’s diminutive Argentinian winger already has $multi-million sponsorship deals with Adidas, Gillette, Konami and Pepsi.

4. Kaka, Real Madrid (31st on Forbes’ list)

Estimated income: $25.6 million (£16.7 million) / Age: 28

The Brazilian didn’t enjoy the best of seasons at the Bernabeu last term, but his endorsement deals with Sony and Adidas (amongst many others) will go someway to softening the blow.

5. Ronaldinho, AC Milan (32nd on Forbes’ list)

Estimated income: $25.1 million (£16.4 million) / Age: 30

The buck-toothed show pony is a shadow of the player he once was, but his image still sells – especially in his homeland of Brazil.

6. Thierry Henry, New York Red Bulls (39th on Forbes’ list)

Estimated income: $23.5 million (£15.4 million) / Age: 33

Henry can already count Reebok and Gillette amongst his current cache of sponsors, but his recent move to the MLS will provide vast scope for further additions.

Please note that Forbes’ calculations are based solely on the individual’s sponsorship revenue, and the income figures displayed do not include club salaries and/or bonuses.

Donovan May Prosper, but Dempsey More Deserving?

los angeles galaxy logo Donovan May Prosper, but Dempsey More Deserving? soccerlens logo Donovan May Prosper, but Dempsey More Deserving?

It has been almost a week since the United States was eliminated from the World Cup at the hands of Ghana. Although they carried aspirations of advancing deep into the knockout stages, their journey should be considered a success. The team brought exposure to a game that is usually little more than an after thought in the sporting consciousness of America. The exposure could also prove lucrative for some on the US squad who may look to propel their club careers to the next level.

The most obvious benefactor is Landon Donovan. The American talisman scored three goals, including an extra-time winner against Algeria. At the age of 27 he is at the top of his game and his stock has never been higher in the eyes of the international football community. However, despite all the praise Donovan recieves as the heart and soul of Team USA , it may be one of his teammates who is more deserving of the attention.

That man is Clint Dempsey, the attacker who spent the majority of the tournament playing opposite Donovan in midfield. Although Donovan took the majority of America’s set pieces and acted as the focal point of the American attack, it was Dempsey who routinely flew through the air on the receiving end and wreaked havoc in the box. His toughness and resilience was on full display throughout the tournament, but it is his resume on the international club scene that seperates Dempsey from his fellow countrymen.

The Texas-native began his club career domestically with the New England Revolution of the MLS, where he would collect both Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honours during his three year stay. In December of 2006, Dempsey became the highest-paid American transferred overseas when signed on with Fulham of the English Premier League.

Although Dempsey’s career in West London began slowly, it has blossomed recently, seeing him tally 8 and 9 goals in each of the last two domestic campaigns. He was also a major contributor to Fulham’s surprise run to the Europa League finals, which saw him break yet another barrier as the first American to play in a European final.

However, it is not trail-blazing nature that sets Clint Dempsey apart from Landon Donovan. The continuous improvement since landing in England (his goal totals have risen every year since his arrival), is something Donovan was unable to accomplish during an uneventful spell with Bayern Leverkusen in Germany. Dempsey also appears equally adept at elevating his play on the larger stages, as evidenced by his now-famous chip, to push Fulham past Italian power Juventus and into the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

However, despite barriers broken and highlights generated, Clint Dempsey still seems like a forgotten man. Perhaps it is a product of playing with a small Fulham club that gets lost behind its heavyweight London neighbours at Arsenal and Chelsea. Perhaps it is his lack of consistent dominance, but isn’t also difficult to capture without true offensive playmakers to feed off of?

All that is known is that as the summer transfer period continues, Clint Dempsey’s name remains absent from rumours. Only small rumblings of interest from Italian side Napoli and mere thoughts of reuniting with old boss Roy Hodgson at Liverpool exist. So as Landon Donovan gets set to enter the Premier League on a full-time basis, it is Clint Dempsey who will hope to continue elevating his standing in England’s top league, even if no one is watching.

20 ‘Lesser Lights’ That Have Shone At The 2010 World Cup

acmilan 20 Lesser Lights That Have Shone At The 2010 World Cupivory coast 20 Lesser Lights That Have Shone At The 2010 World Cuplos angeles galaxy logo 20 Lesser Lights That Have Shone At The 2010 World Cup

With so many of the ‘big guns’ misfiring at this summer’s World Cup, I thought it was high time to take a look at some of the ‘lesser lights’ that have sparkled in South Africa.

Below are the 20 players that, although having seen their sides crash (some more spectacularly than others) out of the tournament prematurely, can fly home from whichever luxury hotel they may have chosen to hole up in, with their heads held high – safe in the knowledge that their careers are very much on an upward trajectory…

(Please remember that players can only qualify to feature on the list if they have already been eliminated from the competition.)

Eduardo – Portugal, Braga: The Portuguese ‘keeper came into the World Cup with an impeccable record, and left the competition with his reputation intact – having only conceded one goal.

Jan Mucha – Slovakia, Legia Warsaw/Everton: As the tournament rumbled on, it became increasingly clear why Everton manager David Moyes had moved so early to secure Mucha’s signature. Brave, athletic and composed, you can be certain that the Slovak will not be content to merely provide back-up for Tim Howard at Goodison Park.

Vincent Enyeama – Nigeria, Hapoel Tel Aviv: Produced a man-of-the-match performance in the Super Eagles’ opening tie with Argentina, heroically limiting Diego Maradona’s men to a single goal, and then produced a string of fine saves in the games thereafter. Destined to move on to bigger and better things next season.

9113217

Ricardo Carvalho – Portugal, Chelsea: It sounds a little strange to include a proven international-class defender on this list, but that’s entirely the point. Carvalho faced stern criticism during the tail end of last season, with many detractors claiming that he just couldn’t cut it at the highest levels anymore. However, the Chelsea man proved his doubters wrong after enjoying a solid World Cup in the heart of the Portuguese defense.

Simon Kjaer – Denmark, Palermo: Whereas his side struggled to find momentum, Kjaer was up-and-running from the off. Cultured on the ball and determined off it, it’s little wonder that a host of European sides are chasing his signature this summer.

Lee Jung-Soo – South Korea, Kashima Antlers: Any defender that notches two goals at a World Cup finals is worthy of note, but the rangy South Korean centre-back’s aerial prowess was just as effective at the other end of the pitch.

9025928

Marcus Tulio Tanaka – Japan, Nagoya Grampus: The player with the most elaborate hair at the finals repeatedly put his body on the line for his country, taking his life into his own hands at times!

Ryan Nelsen – New Zealand, Blackburn: Nelsen is one of those ‘dying breed’ defenders that literally give their all to prevent the ball crossing their goal-line. His heroic non-shall-pass display against Italy alone is enough to earn him a place on this list.

Francisco Rodriguez – Mexico, PSV: A classy, ball-playing centre-back is a rare commodity and, as such, Rodriguez is already being linked with a move to more salubrious surroundings this summer.

Carlos Salcido – Mexico, PSV: Another Dutch-based Mexican. Salcido is one of those players that you were always aware of, but never really sure why – until about a fortnight ago. To say that he never stops running is an insulting understatement, and it’s this tireless flank-play coupled with his tenacious defending that stands him out from the crowd.

9059942 300x199 20 Lesser Lights That Have Shone At The 2010 World Cup

Fabio Coentrao – Portugal, Benfica: In a word, ‘effervescent’. His constant energy went a long way to buoying a Portugal side that was seemingly liable to implode at any moment – thanks largely to the constant protestations of a certain pampered ’superstar’. Despite only breaking into the Benfica first string this season, 22-year-old Coentrao will almost definitely be moving to one of the Spanish big boys this summer.

Jeremy Toulalan – France, Lyon: To include a French player may seem a little wide-of-the-mark, but you can’t escape the fact that Toulalan was immense in Les Bleus’ opening game against Uruguay. One of the few members of Raymond Domenech’s squad that honestly deserves to come out of the World Cup with at least a few shreds of dignity left.

Cheik Tiote – Ivory Coast, Twente: The 24-year-old holding man really impressed as a destructive entity in Les Elephants midfield. He held his position with discipline, allowing the slightly more adventurous Yaya Toure to sporadically join the attack. A clutch of Premier League clubs are already said to be tailing the former Anderlecht man.

9003654

Giovani Dos Santos – Mexico, Tottenham: Having become an almost forgotten figure at White Hart Lane since being farmed out on loan to Galatasaray, ‘Gio’ has persuaded many Spurs supporters that he is worthy of another chance – following some enterprising performances on the right-hand side of El Tri’s forward line.

Valter Birsa – Slovenia, Auxerre: The 23-year-old forward was his country’s single outstanding attack-minded player in South Africa, and cemented that fact with a wonderfully dispatched goal against the USA.

Landon Donovan – USA, L.A Galaxy: Probably the highest-profile player on this list thanks to his celebrity status. After becoming somewhat of a novelty figure within European footballing circles a few years ago (following his failed stints in Germany), Donovan is starting to prove his sceptics wrong. His successful loan spell at Everton last season convinced many that the 28-year-old is now finally ready to make the leap into top-level football, and his goal-scoring exploits in South Africa can only serve to reinforce that opinion.

9061899

Alexis Sanchez – Chile, Udinese: The winger came into the tournament with a burgeoning reputation as ‘one to watch’ and did not let the almost ubiquitous hype weigh him down. Another player seemingly destined for a big money move this summer.

Lee Chung-Yong – South Korea, Bolton: The skillful winger impressed many neutrals in his first season in the Premier League last term, and quickly became a terrace favourite at the Reebok Stadium. The 21-year-old continued his domestic form seamlessly at the World Cup and even managed to bag himself a couple of goals into the bargain.

9111897

Keisuke Honda – Japan, CSKA Moscow: The fact that nearly every single Japanese attack flowed through him at one point or another is testament to his influence on the team. Honda served as a playmaker, a goalscorer, a set-piece specialist, a lone striker and a winger – all with consummate ease.

Javier Hernandez – Mexico, Man Utd: It would appear that Sir Alex Ferguson will have got himself a bit of a bargain if Chicarito continues to play for United like he did for Mexico during the World Cup. Lightning quick, always switched-on and deceptively strong, Hernandez finished the tournament with two goals to his name, despite only starting one game.

So there you go. Feel free to suggest any you think I may have missed…

Transfer Rumors: Chelsea to beat Manchester United to Dutch star Van der Vaart?

championsleague Transfer Rumors: Chelsea to beat Manchester United to Dutch star Van der Vaart?hull city Transfer Rumors: Chelsea to beat Manchester United to Dutch star Van der Vaart?los angeles galaxy logo Transfer Rumors: Chelsea to beat Manchester United to Dutch star Van der Vaart?

It’s anything but a quiet Sunday on the transfers front. Today’s rundown of the top transfer rumors from around Europe include several players who had starring roles for their country at the World Cup and a couple who still have a key part to play for their national sides in South Africa.

While the likes of Rafael Van der Vaart might have another few days – or longer before having to shift their focus, that doesn’t stop the speculation train from running, does it?

So with that said, let’s settle in and get ready for another ride through Rumorville. All aboard!

England

Chelsea To Make VDV Offer

Chelsea are set to make a £10m bid for Real Madrid playmaker Rafael Van der Vaart. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: This could certainly force Manchester United’s hand, as they’re also in the hunt for Van der Vaart. No matter who lands him, they’ll do so for a bargain, given his ability.

Liverpool Eye Bougherra Swoop

Liverpool could be set to try to land Rangers and Algeria center back Madjid Bougherra for £5m. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Bougherra raised his stock by performing well at the World Cup, and with that in mind, Rangers won’t let him go for cheap. You can imagine they don’t want to lose him, his sale would definitely help with strengthening the squad ahead of next season’s Champions League campaign.

Eduardo To Leave Arsenal?

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal striker Eduardo is set to leave the club after Arsene Wenger told the Brazilian-born Croatia star that he isn’t in his plans for next season.

Analysis: If this is the case, it’s extremely unfortunate. Eduardo was in fine form before his horrific leg break in February 2008, but he hasn’t been able to fully rediscover that form since his return, and the addition of Marouane Chamakh might well make him expendable.

Spurs Seek Sessegnon Swoop

Tottenham are planning to make an £8m move for PSG midfielder Stephane Sessegnon. (The Mirror)

Analysis: Sessegnon has made it clear that he wants to leave PSG, so it seems to be a matter of when, not if, he’ll be on the move. Everton and Sunderland have also been linked with him, but Tottenham have an edge, both when it comes to funds and when it comes to being able to offer Sessegnon an immediate chance to play in Europe.

Gudjohnsen’s Future To Be Decided Soon

With Tottenham not yet having made a move to either extend Eidur Gudjohnsen‘s loan deal or sign him permanently, Fulham could be set to swoop in and thrash out a deal with Monaco for the former Chelsea and Bolton man. (The Mirror)

Analysis: Gudjohnsen isn’t exactly a priority for Tottenham, and even if they did hold on to him, there’s a good chance he’d be little more than a bit-part player, with several new names likely set to come to White Hart Lane this summer. So, the chance to have more of an important role at Fulham could appeal to him, along with being able to remain in a familiar place in London.

Everton Return For Donovan?

Everton are considering an attempt to bring Landon Donovan back to Goodison Park after his highly successful loan stint at the club last season. (News of the World)

Analysis: Bruce Arena won’t be keen on losing him with the LA Galaxy looking every bit like a championship team this season, but I’d like to see Donovan return to the Premier League. He showed he has what it takes to succeed in England during his short stint last season, and that was huge for both he and the national team. Perhaps it will have to wait until January, but the time has come (not only in age, but in his maturation and development as a player) for him to make a permanent move to Europe.

Wigan Near Boselli Deal

Estudiantes striker Mauro Boselli has undergone a medical at Wigan. A transfer fee still has yet to be agreed, but the 25-year-old could well cost the Latics more than £5m. (News of the World)

Analysis: Outside of Hugo Rodallega, Wigan weren’t much of a threat in front of goal last season, netting only 37 goals all season (10 from Rodallega, no more than five from anyone else). And whether or not Rodallega is sold this summer, Wigan are in serious need to beef up their attack, and adding a scorer like Boselli would certainly accomplish that.

West Brom Eye New Striker(s)

West Bromwich Albion could be set to make a £2m bid for Stoke City striker James Beattie, and an offer could also be forthcoming for Mallorca striker Pierre Webo, who is valued at £3m. (News of the World)

Analysis: Both would be solid additions for West Brom. Beattie’s best days are behind him, but he can still score from time to time and provides a wealth of top flight experience. Webo hasn’t been able to hold down a regular starting place during his time with Mallorca and Osasuna, but as his impressive scoring rate for Cameroon (17 goals in 43 appearances) shows, he knows how to find the back of the net.

Blackpool Close On Koren

Blackpool are moving to land Slovenia captain Robert Koren, who was released by West Brom after the midfielder helped them earn immediate promotion back to the Premier League. (News of the World)

Analysis: Koren was a key part of West Brom’s squad during their Premier League campaign two seasons ago, and he acquitted himself quite well in the top flight. His Premier League experience and quality (as shown in Slovenia’s brief but impressive World Cup run) will be a significant help for the newcomers in their quest to stay up.

Italy

Inter To Tempt Liverpool With Cambiasso?

Inter Milan could try to sweeten their offer for Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano by including Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso with their cash bid. (The Mirror)

Analysis: Well, it’d certainly worth be pondering if the right amount of cash was offered. Cambiasso’s long been a top performer in midfield, and he’d be a great addition to Liverpool’s side.

Milan Target Klose?

According to Bild, AC Milan could make a €7m move for Bayern Munich striker Miroslav Klose. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Klose dropped down the pecking order last season thanks to a combination of injuries, inconsistency, and the success of Thomas Muller and Ivica Olic, and there’s also 30m investment Mario Gomez in the mix up front. Perhaps there’s not much to read into this particular rumor, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Klose finally make a move abroad.

Spain

Valencia Renew Emana Interest

Valencia are once again in for Real Betis and Cameroon midfielder Achille Emana. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Last summer, it looked like Emana was all set to make a return to his former club (he was a trainee at Valencia in his younger days), but it didn’t happen. Emana went on to have an excellent season with Betis, scoring in double figures for the second straight campaign. But with Real Betis missing out on a quick return to La Liga, there should be no problems with Valencia being able to pull the deal through this time.

Osasuna Land Lekic

Osasuna have beaten fellow La Liga side to the signature of Red Star Belgrade striker Dejan Lekic. The 25-year-old scored 12 league goals for Red Star last season. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: Osasuna were one of the weaker attacking teams in La Liga last season, scoring only 37 goals in 38 league matches. The addition of Lekic, who has an impressive scoring rate (a goal almost every other game through his career) will help take a lot of pressure off of Walter Pandiani, and with Pandiani’s career winding down, it’s also an excellent signing for the future.

Germany

Schalke Turn To Tuncay

Schalke 04 could be set to make a £4m swoop for Stoke City forward Tuncay, who looks set to leave the Britannia Stadium after only one season. (The Mirror)

Analysis: Schalke have already landed Erik Jendrisek from Kaiserslautern, but Schalke could certainly do to add an established, experienced forward to their attack. They lost a third of their production from last season with Kevin Kuranyi’s departure, and past him, no one else netted in double figures.

Scotland

Celtic Close On Bullard

Celtic have been given permission by Hull City to hold talks with midfielder Jimmy Bullard in regards to a potential season-long loan move. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Championship or Champions League? That’s an easy choice. It would also be a great benefit for Hull City to not have to have his £45k per week salary on their books right now, so it’s a good move for all involved.
