A Footballer’s Weapon of Choice

This week ‘professional footballer’ Gavin Grant (…yeah, I didn’t have a clue who either) was sentenced to life imprisonment for the shooting and killing of Leon Labastide.

You can’t help but feel that the ex Millwall, Wycombe and Bradford striker’s choice of weaponry was a little bit of a cliché – I mean, come on, London, gang disputes, gun-crime, we’ve heard it all before.

Perhaps it’s a class thing. I mean, how many Premiership players are involved in tit-for-tat shooting? Other than Emile Heskey.

In fact, the artillery chosen by England’s elite, on the whole, is much more imaginative. Here’s a quick look at 5 ways in which Premiership footballers have chosen to express their malevolent nature in a more creative way.

1)      The Nutter with a Putter

Who else but Craig Bellamy could take such offence at a team-mates refusal to participate in karaoke to swing at him with a gold club? John-Arne Riise suffered from bruising to the leg and was fine to train the day after. If that’s all the damage Bellamy can cause with a golf club it is evident that he needs to work on his swing.

2)      Didier Drogba’s eye for an eye

Irritated that some hooligan may have thrown a coin at you, even though he missed? Why not just employ the baffling logic used by Drogba and fling one straight back into the crowd in some sick game of Russian coin roulette? Surprisingly, Didier did not manage to hit the offender. There were no reported injuries in the Burnley stands and Drogba got himself a three match ban… hardly draw at high-noon.

3)      Joey Barton fights fire with fire

When youth team player Jamie Tandy was caught red-handed trying to set Joey Barton’s shirt aflame, the fiery midfielder retaliated by putting a cigar out in his eye. It may not have been a Hamlet, but there is a certain Shakespearian poetry in the irony of Barton’s revenge.  As a result, Tandy’s career went off the rails and he subsequently tried to file a lawsuit against Barton for making him see red (sorry! I had to get that in there) and abuse his girlfriend.

4)      Cantona hand-to hand (or should that be foot-to-chest) combat

Who needs weapons? Certainly not the French if Zizou and Cantona are anything to go by. Perhaps one of the most infamous incidents in English football was, in essence, an incredible example of the martial arts. In an attack worthy of the Matrix, Cantona managed to clear the advertising boards, thrust his right foot into an insulting fan’s chest, regain his balance and throw in a few hefty haymakers for good measure. For his actions, Cantona received an 8 month international ban, 120 hours community service and a black belt.

5)      Pizza-gate

Tempers boiled over at Old Trafford in 2004 when Manchester United ended Arsenal’s run of 49 games unbeaten. After storming to the visitor’s dressing room,  I doubt Sir Alex Ferguson was expecting to find the area quite literally transformed into an arsenal and be pelted with pizza in the doorway. It’s a shame the Gunners couldn’t hold such a successful siege of their goal during the game.

Manchester United interested in Danish keeper Lindegaard

Manchester United have a concrete interest in Aalesunds FK’s Danish keeper Anders Lindegaard, according to the Norwegian club’s director.

The 26-year-old Lindegaard moved from Danish side Odense last year, and with him in goal, Aalesund sport the third-best defense in the Norwegian top flight this season, with only 19 goals conceded in 18 matches. Thanks to that sound defense, Aalesund are fourth in the Tippeligaen and only four points behind second-placed Valerenga a little more than halfway through the season, after finishing 13th in the 16-team league last season.

Aalesund director Henrik Hoff, in comments to Norwegian media sources, confirmed United’s interest, but he also stated that Lindegaard won’t be sold on the cheap.

“Manchester United have not been in contact with us directly, but I can confirm that there is an interest.”

“There is no smoke without fire.

“In case a big club like Manchester United show interest in our players, we are ready to negotiate.

“But Anders Lindegaard is in my eyes the best keeper in the Tippeliga and if he should be sold, a big sum will be required.”

Stoke City considering move for Manchester City flop Santa Cruz

In an effort to add some scoring punch before the start of their third Premier League campaign, Stoke City could make a move for out of favor Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz, according to the Guardian.

After finishing an impressive 12th in their inaugural Premier League campaign in the 2008/09 season, Tony Pulis’ side improved upon that last season by finishing 11th. This finish came in spite of the Potters scoring only 34 goals all season, with only Wolves (32) scoring fewer.

Thus far this summer, Stoke City have been linked with moves for West Ham’s Carlton Cole and Wigan’s Hugo Rodallega, and given their interest in both of those highly-rated strikers, they could afford to splash the cash on Santa Cruz, who, according to the report, would likely be available for less than half of the nearly 18m that City spent when they bought him from Blackburn last summer.

After scoring 19 goals in his debut campaign at Blackburn in the 2007/08 season, the last two seasons haven’t gone well for Santa Cruz. He scored only four league goals in an injury-plagued 2008/09 season, and in his first season at Eastlands, started only six league matches and scored only three goals.

Given his struggles over the last couple of seasons, there’d be some risk involved in making a move for Santa Cruz. However, with the chance to start regularly and rediscover his form, the Paraguayan could be just the man to help Stoke City make a move into the top half of the table this season.

Ibrahimovic: “I shall remain a Barca player.”

soccerlens logo Ibrahimovic: I shall remain a Barca player.

Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic speaking in Norway on thursday has said that he will be staying at what he believes to be “the best club in the world”.

In his press conference before the Barcelona game this evening with Valerenga, Ibrahimovic made it clear that he plans to stay on at the club.

“I’m a Barca player and I shall remain a Barca player.”

The Swede has high hopes for the season that’s just getting underway and already has his eyes set on the first title of the season, the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla.

Ibra said that he has spoken with coach Pep Guardiola in detail and said:

“He [Guardiola] told me I’m important for him, and from now, what I have to do is keep working hard to maintain his confidence.”

Definitely, it is only normal for there to be competition at a team like Barcelona, but will the competition be too good for the tall striker now that World Cup winner David Villa has joined the squad as well. Only time will tell.

Severel rumors had emerged about his future in recent weeks and Ibrahimovic replied to them by saying:

“Those rumors have not affected me because I have no doubt that I want to stay here. I’d rather take the rumors as a compliment.”

Frankly Zlatan, being related to a move to Manchester City isn’t really a compliment in football circles.

Liverpool coach Roy Hudgson has confirmed that Javier Mascherano has made it “perfectly clear” that he wants to leave the club. The Argentine has been strongly linked with a move to treble winners Inter Milan to link up with former Reds coach Rafa Benitez.

Speaking at the press conference, Hudgson said that Macherano wishes to leave, but there is still a glimmer of hope of keeping him at Anfield:

“Yes he wants to leave the club, he’s made that perfectly clear.”

“I think he wanted to leave a year ago and he wants to leave now as well. But, he is contracted to Liverpool club so whether he leaves will be our decision.”

“At the moment he’s a Liverpool player, he’ll be expected to be a Liverpool player and will be treated like a Liverpool player until such a day arrives when he no longer is.”

“The mere fact a player is a little bit unhappy with his situation and would prefer to leave doesn’t necessarily mean that he will.”

“Yes it disappoints me but it’s not unusual. In every football club all through the Premier League and the world there’ll be players in the team who want to leave.”

“Some are allowed to, some are not allowed to. That’s the situation.”

“Mascherano is a Liverpool player and has a two-year contract. I expect him to honor that contract until the day comes when the club decide to accept an offer for his services.”
