Portsmouth vs West Brom: Slow & steady wins the race?

We investigate two examples of how quick success has crippled clubs financially but on the other hand by having success and failure rolled into one will reap financial rewards and over a period of time give success on the pitch.

JANUARY 2010, Portsmouth FC, bottom of the Premier League, already seen five owners come and go since the start of the campaign, 80 million worth of debt on their back, in trouble with HM revenues and customs, was it really all worth it?

Portsmouth promoted under Harry Redknapp back in 2003 never looked back and drove on in the top flight under the watchful guidance of chairman Milan Manderic. Pompey grew and grew and after surviving for two seasons began a slow rise up the table recording top 12th and 10th finishes by 2006.

Following a big money take over from Alexandra Gaydamk in 2006 the pompey faithful expected big things from the team and with Redknapp returning from rivals Southampton to keep the club up on the last day of the season at Wigan, Pompey were due a step up in the premier league.

With the financial backing of Gaydamak big money signings were made such as Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Sol Campbell, Lassana Diarra and John Utaka as people were looking up and taking notice of the minnows from the south coast, but in the end in was all good to be true.

The following season saw Portsmouth make it to Wembley on the way dumping out champions Manchester United in an historic season for the club. After overcoming West Brom in the semi-finals they dispatched Cardiff in the final and won the FA Cup much to the delight of Peter Storrie, but in the back of his mind he must of always known what the effects were going to be, Portsmouth didn’t have the money to keep this going, mounting debts, run-ins with the tax man of transfer bungs and overseas accounts which dated all the way back to 2002, cooks up a recipe for disaster.

A 2-2 draw with AC Milan at home in the UEFA Cup was seen by many as the biggest game in the clubs history, seen as what is known in the game as “a money spinner”, but what they didn’t know was that not enough money was spun to get Pompey out of this mess. Redknapp jumped ship to join Spurs in 2008 leaving a trail of disaster in his wake. Many see him along with Storrie as the culprit for the demise of Portsmouth.

Paul Hart came in and kept the club up in 2009 as all the stories of financial ruin came out. Defoe, Crouch and Diarra were shipped out but Utaka and co. stayed on wages of 90,000 plus and crippled the wage bill. Five owners in 5 months spelt disaster. As it became public and Storrie was the number one enemy. And as people rant and rave in the age of football being a business and clubs gaining crippling debts for instant success the question rises as it might look good to start with, in the long run is it really worth it, or is there a different route, the game already has an example.

SUNDAY 21ST APRIL 2002. A landmark day in the history of West Bromwich Albion. This started a revolution that might always have looked to the people outside of the club like a positive thing but in the long run was the best thing that any club could of done in this day and age.

Under Gary Megson the Baggies enjoyed two promotions and a relegation, followed then by Bryan Robson’s with a survival season and then another relegation, then under Tony Mowbray Albion lost the play off final, won promotion the season after, then instant relegation followed, and following Roberto Di Matteo has taken West Brom back into the elite of English football with the club looking as strong on the field and financially as ever, showing how the strategy is the best one for a developing club.

As parachute payments rise and rise every year instead of going straight for success like Storrie did at Pompey the cool, businesslike approach of one small step at a time by Jeremy Peace at the Hawthorns has seen them have success every other year followed by relegation. He’s had his critics but in the long run it shows that is the best method for clubs like the Albion. And one way of showing clubs how they should be run and not sending the game into more disrepute.

But now the time has come along that Peace and Albion have to deliver. They have had long financial stability for the last ten years growing and planning and now it’s time to deliver on the pitch, with money available and Albion going from long ball under Robson and Megson and being branded “1-0 to the Albion”, to the expansive type of play that won Mowbray and now Di Matteo the plaudits.

From Peace’s scheme Albion have grown other that footballing wise. Albion now have a strong football foundation, see as one of the best in the country, a first class training ground, and a 27,000 all seater stadium. But through Albion having success but then failure one thing has remained the same, the support is always as good as ever.

Seen alongside Portsmouth as one of the best sets of supporters anywhere in country Albion fans may finally get what they deserve after ten years of being branded the “yo-yo club”. But Pompey fans have had their success and short lived it was. But Albion have a healthy future ahead now.

Greed of individuals have crippled Pompey. Stupidity of Storrie has seen him go from Hero to Villian. Peace is seen by some as villain, but thats not so as he has built West Brom from a club on the verge of slipping into the third tear to the Premier League. Failure as people have seen has had to come with this, but Albion’s failure is small. Pompey’s is one that takes years and years to repair.

It’s a very important summer in Manchester, to say the least.

Manchester United are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of a run at a record-breaking 19th top flight title and a chance to play for a fourth Champions League title come next May at Wembley, and they’re no doubt also looking to the future as well.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are looking to spend, spend, spend in order to aid their push to become a serious contender for Premier League and European honors sooner rather than later.

Both sides don’t have a lot to show for when it comes to confirmed summer transfers just yet, but you can be assured that things are going to pick up for the Manchester rivals very, very soon, especially if a couple of tidbits in today’s rundown of top transfer rumors come to fruition.

England

Manchester Rivals In For Casillas

In an interview with the Daily Star, Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas said that both Manchester United and Manchester City are interested in his services. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: He’s not going anywhere. Perhaps one day, but not right now. Though for what it’s worth, United fans who are also England supporters might well prefer him right now over Manuel Neuer, who likely doesn’t have many fans in England right about now.

Fabiano Has Eyes For United

Also from the Daily Star, Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano says that his next destination will either be Manchester United or AC Milan, and he spoke very glowingly of United, the Premier League, and the chance to be Wayne Rooney’s strike partner. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: The only negative mark on Fabiano is his age (he’ll be 30 in November), and that could give some pause, what with 29-year-old Berbatov and 30-year-old Owen already in United’s strikeforce. However, it’s also worth mentioning that Fabiano is very much in his prime right now form-wise, and even three or four seasons at the level he’s at currently would make him well worth the investment.

City Prepare New Kolarov Bid

Manchester City are set to make a bid of £18m for Lazio star Aleksandar Kolarov, though Lazio have a valuation of 25 million euros for the Serbian left back. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: Real Madrid have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign him, but there could be competition from Juventus and perhaps Inter. Whether Lazio will be able to squeeze their asking price out of someone remains to be seen, but whatever eight-figure amount he’s sold for, it’ll represent quite the return on Lazio’s investment – they purchased him for only £800k three summers ago.

Tottenham Close To Forlan Capture?

According to The Mirror, Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan is reportedly sweet on a switch to Tottenham, and Spurs could be set to splash out £20m on the former Manchester United man.

Analysis: Atletico want to hold on to both Forlan and Sergio Aguero, but frankly, there will never be a better time to sell Forlan and find a much younger replacement than this summer, especially if he raises his value even further with a few more impressive performances at the World Cup. Forlan is 31, and while he can still score that many goals, to get upwards of £20m for any 31-year-old is good business.

Arteta To Leave Everton

Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta has asked to leave the club and return to his native Spain, as he and his wife want to be closer to their families after receiving the news that their son has a visual impairment. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: It’s a shame, but you certainly can’t hold it against him, because family comes first.

Stoke Eye Bentley Swoop

Stoke City are planning to make a move for Tottenham winger David Bentley, according to The Mirror.

Analysis: Matthew Etherington has seen his career rejuvenated at Stoke City, and the same could happen for Bentley, who did produce in his limited opportunities last season but still hasn’t performed up to expectations in two seasons at the club.

With Etherington on the left and Bentley on the right (and those patented long Rory Delap throws, of course), Stoke could be a more dangerous attacking side than what we’ve seen in their first couple of Premier League seasons (38 goals in 2008/09, 34 last season)…if they can find a reliable finisher or two from somewhere.

Birmingham Turn To Wallace

After having their bid for Fulham’s Paul Konchesky rejected, Birmingham City are considering a move for Hearts left back Lee Wallace. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: Wallace has been a fixture in Hearts’ starting XI over the last couple of seasons, and he’s been a part of the first team since he was 17, so he’s got loads of experience despite being only 22. He’s also broken into Scotland’s senior national side, so he’s got a very, very bright future ahead.

Spain

Maicon To Join Up With Mourinho In Madrid

According to The Sun, Real Madrid have beaten out Manchester City for Inter right back Maicon, who is set to seal a reunion with Jose Mourinho in a £25m deal that will be wrapped up when the Brazilian returns from the World Cup.

Analysis: Really, the only question for me all along has been when he’ll sign for Real, not if. So this is no surprise, even with City’s money, ambition, and the familiarity in the form of Roberto Mancini giving them reason to feel confident about somehow swaying him.

Italy

Juve Target N’Zogbia

Juventus are interested in Wigan midfielder Charles N‘Zogbia. The 24-year-old was one of the bright spots in a season of struggle for the Latics, scoring seven goals and assisting on seven more in 39 appearances. (Transfer Market Web)

Analysis: There’s a good chance an English suitor could pop up, but it’d take a lot to pass up the chance to play for one of the top clubs in the world, to play in the Champions League, and to earn a significant pay increase.

Scotland

Chase For Boyd Heats Up

Rangers striker Kris Boyd will become a free agent this week, and he doesn‘t have a shortage of suitors. Newcastle and Middlesbrough are both in the hunt for Boyd, according to the News of the World.

They could face competition from three Turkish sides, as Turkish champions Bursaspor, along with Kayserispor and Ankaragucu, are also interested in the 26-year-old.

Kayserispor, managed by former Rangers striker Shota Arveldaze, are hoping to have Boyd and his agent in for discussions this week, and they have reportedly offered Boyd a two-year deal worth £50k a week – but the offer is off the table if Boyd meets with any of his other Turkish suitors. (The Press Association)

Analysis: Such an offer would trump what anyone else would offer him, and given that it’s only a two-year deal, he’d be able to see it out and have a chance to play in England with several good years still ahead of him. However, Newcastle will be able to offer him a nice salary and the chance to play in the Premier League, and the combination of the two might make St. James’ Park the most attractive destination in the end.

Turkey

Piquionne Picks Fenerbahce

Lyon striker Frederic Piquionne, who starred on loan for Portsmouth last season, is set for a move to Fenerbahce. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Dani Guiza hasn’t quite turned out to be the prolific striker that Fenerbahce fans likely thought they were getting when he was signed two summers ago after he finished top scorer in La Liga with 27 goals for Mallorca, and Semih Senturk scored only seven goals in all competitions after netting in double figures each of the previous four seasons. So there’s certainly a need to add some quality depth in attack, and after acquitting himself well in England, I’m sure Piquionne can be a great success in Turkey.

Galatasaray In Ledesma Negotiations

Galatasaray will hold talks with the agent of Lazio midfielder Cristian Ledesma on Tuesday. (Tribal Football)

Analysis: I see Ledesma likely remaining in Serie A, but Galatasaray can offer him a sizable salary, European football, and the chance to play under a top manager in Frank Rijkaard (provided he doesn’t leave sometime this summer), so he certainly can’t go wrong with a move to Turkey, even if the league is a step down from Serie A.

Portsmouth Agree Deal To Come Out Of Administration

championsleague Portsmouth Agree Deal To Come Out Of Administrationportsmouth Portsmouth Agree Deal To Come Out Of Administration

An overwhelming majority of Portsmouth FC’s creditors have voted in favour of a deal that will most likely see the south coast club exit administration at some point this summer, and hopefully therefore save them from any further points deductions whilst playing in the Championship next season.

A total 81.3% of the creditors, who are owed a combined total of around £100 million, voted to implement a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) that will see them receive just 20p of every pound they are owed over the next five years.

One of the few groups to oppose the deal were HM Revenues & Customs (HMRC) who, after disputing the amount of money they are owed by the club, have been granted a further 28 days to lodge an appeal against the CVA being put in place.

HMRC are disputing Pompey administrator Andrew Andronikou’s (possibly unsubstantiated) claim that he has reduced the amount the club owe them from £37 million to £24 million – confirming their stance in a brief statement;

“HMRC notes that the result of today’s vote was to accept the CVA proposals. We will now be carefully considering our position,” it said.

HMRC stands by the full amount of its claim (£37m). We will now carefully consider our position following (the club’s) decision to reduce the amount of our claim for voting purposes.”

The fact that HRMC still have an opportunity to foil Portsmouth’s re-emergence from the doledrums of their recent financial plight is a minor sticking point, in what has otherwise been a positive day for the club and it’s supporters.

Chairman of the Pompey supporters’ club Nigel Tresidder attended the creditors meeting and said that, although he remains concerned over the HRMC’s opposition to the CVA, today really was a step forward for the club in it’s bid to get back into the black;

“[The vote] is excellent news, other than HMRC have 28 days to appeal against it.

I think the people in charge of the club are confident of winning any appeal but it’s time the uncertainty came to an end.”

Tresidder and lead administrator Andronikou (amongst others) will now continue their search to find a new buyer for the Portsmouth which, with approximately 60% of the club’s debt effectively wiped away, should not continue to be quite such the thankless task it appeared to be at this time yesterday.

Sensational (but hardly original) stuff in the British red-tops this morning, with the ‘news’ that Spanish giants Real Madrid are preparing to break the bank once again this summer with a massive double raid on the Premier League for a pair of England’s finest.

I’ll only believe it when I see both Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard holding that famous white shirt aloft whilst being unveiled in front of a baying 50,000-strong crowd at the Bernabeu – but that’s just a personal quirk!

David James To Be Considered For Portsmouth Manager Job

According to the club’s administrator, Andrew Andronikou, Portsmouth’s veteran goalkeeper David James has put himself forward as a potential candidate to fill the recently-vacated managerial hot seat at Fratton Park.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Andronikou said;

“David has expressed an interest in taking the next stage of his career into management, albeit we believe [the Portsmouth vacancy] has come a bit too early to appoint him as manager.”

Andronikou then went on to say that, although James may not be the ideal candidate for the job, the 39-year-old stopper will certainly be consulted in Pompey’s search for a new manager;

“I believe he will have an input into the decision going forward, I think everyone has an input into what is going to happen, but the David James question is very much core to our decision making.

He is one of the most articulate guys I have ever met and I shall be discussing the situation with him.”

James saw his playing contract at Portsmouth lapse at the end of last season and has since been offered new terms but, judging by Andronikou’s admission, it would seem that a coaching or even management role is now in the forefront of the England keeper’s mind.

Whilst James obviously has the intelligence and geniality (coupled with the requisite respect of his fellow professionals) to take charge of a football team, the fact remains that he has absolutely no previous management experience.

Portsmouth, given their current precarious position, need someone with a proven, reliable presence at the helm – someone like…well, like Avram Grant really.

There have been whispers of a management team being created, that would see Pompey veterans James, Hermann Hreidarsson and Linvoy Primus taking charge of first-team proceedings, but such a move would probably be an indication of the Portsmouth boards dire financial situation, rather than their leftfield problem solving capacity.

Perennial dullard Iain Dowie has also been linked with the south coast club’s vacant post and, much as I’m loath to say it, he would be a perfectly suitable appointment – an unspectacular but never-the-less solid ‘Football Management Consultant’ (© Hull City).

So, given the stringent restrictions in place, who would you like/want/expect to take over from Mr. Grant at Portsmouth?
