Aston Villa manager O’Neill admits Milner wants Manchester City move

One of the top names on Manchester City’s extensive summer transfer list is Aston Villa midfielder James Milner, and while their attempts to land the England man have fallen short thus far, the saga could soon be over.

In speaking to Sky Sports News, Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill revealed that Milner has already admitted that Milner has stated his wishes to leave, and O’Neill admitted that Milner’s wish could be granted if City can improve their initial offer.

“I had a conversation with James before the World Cup and he intimated that he’d like to go.”

“City made an offer but it did not meet our valuation. I’m sure matters will be resolved soon. James is back next week having had an extended holiday.

“There is a difference of valuation at this moment between the buying club and the selling club.

“That may well be resolved and if that is the case then absolutely fine.

“I think James’ agent has told our chief executive that he wouldn’t be signing a new contract.

“Obviously that puts a different slant on things, like everything else.

“If a fee is agreed, at the end of the day, the player can leave.”

If a deal is to happen, the sooner the better, the £25m-£30m would come in handy for spicing up what has been thus far been an extremely quiet summer for Aston Villa.

If Milner does leave, O‘Neill will look to Ashley Young and Stewart Downing to have big seasons, and he could also look to replace some of the lost production with the purchase of Celtic attacker Aiden McGeady. O’Neill gave McGeady his Celtic debut in the 2003/04 season, and he became a regular in the following campaign, which was O’Neill’s final season at the club. Last season, McGeady had seven goals and 14 assists in 35 league appearances, and just last week, Celtic manager Neil Lennon said that he believes the Ireland international wants to leave the club.

Some of the funds could also be used to bring in an experienced striker, with Robbie Keane and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar among the names mentioned as Villa targets this summer.

If O’Neill spends wisely, Villa could end up being better without Milner in the end, but it remains to be seen if and when he’ll have to start planning for life without Milner this summer.

Liverpool land future defensive star in Rangers ace Danny Wilson

After a previously quiet summer for Liverpool, it’s fair to say that things have picked up this week.

After adding a key component for the present with the signing of free agent Joe Cole to a lucrative deal, Liverpool have landed a future defensive star in snapping up Rangers defender Danny Wilson. Liverpool will pay £2m up front for the 18-year-old, and add-ons could see Rangers receive up to £5m total.

In his first interview with Liverpool’s official site, Wilson said,

“This is a massive challenge for me. This is one of the best leagues in the world and I will be playing for one of the biggest teams in the world.

“Coming here from Scotland, people may say I might not be ready for this, but that is a challenge I want to put on myself and that’s the reason I came here.

“Everyone knows about the history of this football club with 18 league titles.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision to come here as Liverpool are not a team who come in for you every day, so I can’t wait to get started.

“There were other clubs interested in me who are in the Champions League, but once Liverpool came in for me there was only one team I wanted to go to.”

Center back is an area where Liverpool aren’t short on depth at the moment, so Roy Hodgson will be able to ease Wilson into action. Given his left-footedness, Hodgson could decide to give him some opportunities at left back, though recent rumors have Liverpool linked with a move for Manchester City’s Wayne Bridge. Whatever the case, don’t be surprised if he quickly makes a name for himself, considering how far he’s come in such a short time.

Wilson, who captained Scotland’s U-19 squad and has eight caps for the U-21 side, made his first-team debut in October 2009 when he started in a League Cup tie against Dundee, and the next week, he became the youngest player to play for Rangers in the Champions League when he started against Unirea Urziceni. Wilson scored his first senior goal in a 4-1 win over Hearts in March, and he also assisted on a goal in a 3-1 win over Aberdeen in April.

Wilson’s rapid rise saw him scoop up Young Player of the Year awards from the Scottish FWA, the Scottish PFA, and the club’s supporters. And now, it’s seen him make the leap to the Premier League and one of the most storied clubs in football.

Transfer Rumors: Liverpool sign young Rangers star Wilson

England

Liverpool Land Wilson

Liverpool have signed Rangers defender Danny Wilson in a deal that could be worth up to £5m. Liverpool will pay £2m up front for the 18-year-old, who was both the Scottish FWA and PFA Young Player of the Year last season. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Making your first-team debut and winning those accolades in the same season is no small feat. Wilson won’t be counted on to start from the outset, given Liverpool’s depth at center back, but he certainly has the potential to be an anchor at the back for Liverpool for many, many years.

Premier League Duo In Raul Link

According to the Sun, Tottenham and Newcastle are both interested in signing veteran striker Raul on a free. According to their reports, the former Real Madrid star is said to favor a move to London.

Analysis: Here’s another player who it’d be great to see in the Premier League before his career is over, and I think he still has plenty to offer. Raul may be getting up there in years, but it wasn’t that long ago that he put together back-to-back 20+ goal seasons after it looked like he was almost done.

Sunderland Close On Bramble

Wigan defender Titus Bramble was set for a medical at Sunderland yesterday after the two clubs agreed a £1m fee for the 28-year-old. (The Guardian)

Analysis: Sunderland had struck out in their search for a second new center back to this point, but Bramble is a nice consolation. Bramble has already had success under Steve Bruce, having been a regular while Bruce was at Wigan from November 2007 to the end of the 2008/09 season, so Bruce knows he’s getting someone he can rely on.

Hammers Near Double Striker Swoop

Meanwhile, the Hammers have also improved their chances of signing Nice striker Loic Remy. Instead of paying in installments as was their original preference, West Ham have agreed to pay €13.5m up front for the Frenchman, who is also wanted by Liverpool. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: So, which one will it be, West Ham or Liverpool? West Ham will be much improved under Avram Grant this season and would offer more regular starting opportunities, while Liverpool would offer immediate European football, the chance to play for one of the top clubs in Europe, and perhaps a better salary. Can’t go wrong either way, but West Ham are in a good position…for now, at least. If things happen to go against them though, it looks like Rosario Central striker Milton Caraglio could be their consolation prize.

Scotland

James Set For Celtic Talks

Celtic manager Neil Lennon is set to meet with free agent keeper David James later this week after Celtic return from their North American tour. Celtic are in the market for a new keeper after the sale of Artur Boruc to Fiorentina. (The Guardian)

Analysis: Perhaps James would prefer to find an option where he’d be first-choice keeper, which wouldn’t be guaranteed at Celtic, with Lukasz Zaluska in the mix. However, this would be a good opportunity for him, as he could help with the development of a young(er) keeper and perhaps even get his first-ever taste of Champions League football.

Spain

Atletico‘s Taiwo Deal In Limbo

Atletico Madrid looked set to complete a deal for Marseille defender Taye Taiwo, but the deal has stalled, as Marseille want the transfer fee all up front instead of in installments. (BBC Sport)

Analysis: If the two sides can reach a compromise (that shouldn’t be hard, should it?), Atletico’s defense will take another step towards respectability. Plus, with the addition of Taiwo and Filipe Luis, who can both score the occasional goal, they’ll have two new additions that fit in well in Atletico’s attack-oriented style of play.

France

Lorient Loan Coquelin

Lorient have signed Arsenal starlet Francis Coquelin on loan. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: While he would’ve likely seen more cup and league appearances than he did last season, this will be a good opportunity for Coquelin to earn regular first-team experience in a top league, which will only serve to hasten his development. With his versatility to play in midfield and defense, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Portugal

Sporting Seek Spurs Striker

The agent of Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko says that negotiations are ongoing over his client moving to Sporting Lisbon on loan. According to Portuguese reports, Tottenham are also interested in including Sporting’s highly rated young winger Armindo Bangna Bruma in the deal. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: The Portuguese top flight isn’t known for its scoring, so even with only 42 goals in 30 games, but Sporting need to strengthen their attack to have any hope of keeping up with Benfica and Porto this season after finishing 28 points back of Benfica and 20 back of Porto (who were only one spot ahead in third) last season. Pavlyuchenko hasn’t shown it on a regular basis at Tottenham, but he’s capable of finding the net on a regular basis if given the opportunities.

Walter Promises Youth – Who to look out for?

soccerlens logo Walter Promises Youth Who to look out for?

Rangers manager Walter Smith has admitted youth will get its chance next season at Ibrox as the SPL Champions face tough times with debt problems. The exact figure of the debt has been disguised in recent months after reports suggested Rangers could face a huge tax bill from HMRC which could double, maybe even triple, Rangers’ debts which were around £25m about 6 months ago.

With the Rangers supporters growing increasingly frustrated and angry at the current major shareholder Sir David Murray, a small ray of positive light could shine on Edmiston Drive next season with the promise of some new talent emerging on the Ibrox pitch.

On Sunday afternoon, Rangers took part in their opening pre-season match against Queen of the South in which Kenny Miller’s goal was all that separated the two teams, but the overall result was shadowed by the fine performances from a few youngsters making the step up in the Rangers first-team.

Nine Rangers youngsters made an appearance yesterday with them all coming off the bench at Palmerston Park. With Alan Hutton, Charlie Adam, Chris Burke and Steven Smith just some of the names who have progressed from the Rangers youth teams, here are some of the players to watch out for in the famous Rangers shirt next season:

Danny Wilson – Defender
celtic rangers 100103 Walter Promises Youth Who to look out for?

The 18-year-old central defender made his first-team debut back in 2009 against Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League and produced an excellent performance when just 17. Wilson replaced Bougherra for a large spell of last season in the heart of the Rangers defence and had a solid partnership with captain David Weir.

The classy centre-back, similar to Frank De Boer in his attributes, made his second appearance in the Champions League against VFB Stuttgart and stifled the £10m Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak. He also made his first appearance in the hotbed Old Firm atmosphere as the Gers went to Celtic Park with a few regulars missing and Wilson showed real character to survive a Celtic onslaught to leave with a 1-1 draw.

Wilson has recieved strong interest from Liverpool this summer, but since Rafael Benitez departed for Italy, that speculation has cooled down and the young defender will be hoping to challenge Weir, Bougherra and Webster for a first-team jersey this season.

John Fleck – Midfielder
rangers v dundee united john fleck 300x227 Walter Promises Youth Who to look out for?

Fleck has been in and out of the Rangers first-team since emerging back in 2008/2009 and scoring his first Rangers goal against Dundee United at Ibrox. It was a situation which optimised Fleck as a player, collecting the ball at the halfway line and marauding through the Dundee United defence before being fouled inside the box and the fiery midfielder showed immense character to slot home the penalty.

The 18-year-old is your typical “No.10″ and he has real potential to make the grade at Ibrox this season. Perhaps, you could argue he is being halted in his progression by the pragmatic boss Smith, but Fleck has became a growing favourite at Ibrox for his creative displays. In the first-team, Fleck has mainly played as a left-sided midfielder but naturally he is a second-striker or attacking midfielder and this is where his glowing performances made him one of the most highly-rated youngsters in the UK.

His sturdy and stocky build, combined with quick feet and good movement make him a handful for opposition defences and Fleck has contributed with numerous assists whenever he has featured in the first-team. Many punters are claiming this is make or break for Fleck, but as an 18-year-old with bags of ability and a real desire for Rangers, time is most certainly on his side.

Gregg Wylde – Defender
0,,5~7613874,00 Walter Promises Youth Who to look out for?

The 19-year-old has already made two sub appearances for the first-team against Hearts and Hamilton last season. Wylde naturally is a left full-back and has played there regularly for the Rangers Under 19s but Walter Smith deployed him as a left-sided midfielder on both occasions he featured in the first-team.

Wylde has blistering pace and his directness in possession has grown on the Rangers support with many fans asking for him to be played as a left-winger regularly next season. Having seen Wylde a number of times, both for the first-team and the Under 19s, he definitely has a big future ahead of him and could find himself a regular next season at left-back with Bosnian defender Sasa Papac’s contract running out next summer.

Wylde could be compared with Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra in terms of size and attributes and his ability to support any attack from left-back is something which has caught the eye in his early career.

Thomas Kind Bendiksen – Midfielder
0,,5~5447478,00 Walter Promises Youth Who to look out for?

The Norweigan midfielder can be viewed on YouTube casually showing his ‘keepie-uppie’ skills with a tennis ball, but the highly-rated youngster finally made his Rangers debut yesterday in the 1-0 pre-season win. The 20-year-old, who joined Rangers in 2007 from Halstad, is a cultured midfielder who was rewarded for his fine performances in the youth side with a spot on the bench against Hibernian in April.

Bendiksen was part of the U19 squad which lifted the Scottish Youth Cup against Celtic at Hampden, but a long-term knee injury stalled his promising career and he returned to competitive action last season. It is highly likely the talented midfielder will fly out to Australia with the first-team squad for pre-season.

Alongside these four youngsters are the talented midfielders Jamie Ness and Stephen Stirling, who are likely to find themselves further down the pecking order. Ness and Stirling have already featured in the Rangers squad with several appearances on the bench and are ones to watch for the future.

Ness has a very tidy left-foot and excellent passing ability, while Stirling has good timing in making runs into the penalty area and is a fine striker of the ball. With more experience through going out on loan, Jordan McMillan and Andrew Shinnie return for pre-season with high hopes of pressing the current regulars for a first-team shirt.

McMillan signed a new 2-year-deal this summer and after stints with Queen of the South and Hamilton, the defender will be looking to become Steven Whittaker’s replacement if he picked up any injuries. Shinnie had a successful spell at Dundee but finds himself in a tough tussle for a central-midfield start.

For sure, the future looks bleak for Rangers off the pitch and action must be taken against the major shareholder Sir David Murray, who seems to be killing the SPL Champions month by month like a bad illness. The future of the club could lie within the hands of the supporters, who are weighing up a potential fan ownership model but on the pitch the signs look bright despite a number of high-profile players leaving the club as a talented group of youngsters will be determined to fill their positions.
