Transfer Rumors: Liverpool sign young Rangers star Wilson

England

Liverpool Land Wilson

Liverpool have signed Rangers defender Danny Wilson in a deal that could be worth up to £5m. Liverpool will pay £2m up front for the 18-year-old, who was both the Scottish FWA and PFA Young Player of the Year last season. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Making your first-team debut and winning those accolades in the same season is no small feat. Wilson won’t be counted on to start from the outset, given Liverpool’s depth at center back, but he certainly has the potential to be an anchor at the back for Liverpool for many, many years.

Premier League Duo In Raul Link

According to the Sun, Tottenham and Newcastle are both interested in signing veteran striker Raul on a free. According to their reports, the former Real Madrid star is said to favor a move to London.

Analysis: Here’s another player who it’d be great to see in the Premier League before his career is over, and I think he still has plenty to offer. Raul may be getting up there in years, but it wasn’t that long ago that he put together back-to-back 20+ goal seasons after it looked like he was almost done.

Sunderland Close On Bramble

Wigan defender Titus Bramble was set for a medical at Sunderland yesterday after the two clubs agreed a £1m fee for the 28-year-old. (The Guardian)

Analysis: Sunderland had struck out in their search for a second new center back to this point, but Bramble is a nice consolation. Bramble has already had success under Steve Bruce, having been a regular while Bruce was at Wigan from November 2007 to the end of the 2008/09 season, so Bruce knows he’s getting someone he can rely on.

Hammers Near Double Striker Swoop

Meanwhile, the Hammers have also improved their chances of signing Nice striker Loic Remy. Instead of paying in installments as was their original preference, West Ham have agreed to pay €13.5m up front for the Frenchman, who is also wanted by Liverpool. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: So, which one will it be, West Ham or Liverpool? West Ham will be much improved under Avram Grant this season and would offer more regular starting opportunities, while Liverpool would offer immediate European football, the chance to play for one of the top clubs in Europe, and perhaps a better salary. Can’t go wrong either way, but West Ham are in a good position…for now, at least. If things happen to go against them though, it looks like Rosario Central striker Milton Caraglio could be their consolation prize.

Scotland

James Set For Celtic Talks

Celtic manager Neil Lennon is set to meet with free agent keeper David James later this week after Celtic return from their North American tour. Celtic are in the market for a new keeper after the sale of Artur Boruc to Fiorentina. (The Guardian)

Analysis: Perhaps James would prefer to find an option where he’d be first-choice keeper, which wouldn’t be guaranteed at Celtic, with Lukasz Zaluska in the mix. However, this would be a good opportunity for him, as he could help with the development of a young(er) keeper and perhaps even get his first-ever taste of Champions League football.

Spain

Atletico‘s Taiwo Deal In Limbo

Atletico Madrid looked set to complete a deal for Marseille defender Taye Taiwo, but the deal has stalled, as Marseille want the transfer fee all up front instead of in installments. (BBC Sport)

Analysis: If the two sides can reach a compromise (that shouldn’t be hard, should it?), Atletico’s defense will take another step towards respectability. Plus, with the addition of Taiwo and Filipe Luis, who can both score the occasional goal, they’ll have two new additions that fit in well in Atletico’s attack-oriented style of play.

France

Lorient Loan Coquelin

Lorient have signed Arsenal starlet Francis Coquelin on loan. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: While he would’ve likely seen more cup and league appearances than he did last season, this will be a good opportunity for Coquelin to earn regular first-team experience in a top league, which will only serve to hasten his development. With his versatility to play in midfield and defense, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Portugal

Sporting Seek Spurs Striker

The agent of Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko says that negotiations are ongoing over his client moving to Sporting Lisbon on loan. According to Portuguese reports, Tottenham are also interested in including Sporting’s highly rated young winger Armindo Bangna Bruma in the deal. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: The Portuguese top flight isn’t known for its scoring, so even with only 42 goals in 30 games, but Sporting need to strengthen their attack to have any hope of keeping up with Benfica and Porto this season after finishing 28 points back of Benfica and 20 back of Porto (who were only one spot ahead in third) last season. Pavlyuchenko hasn’t shown it on a regular basis at Tottenham, but he’s capable of finding the net on a regular basis if given the opportunities.

Fantastic 4 to Super 6: City and Spurs on the rise?

championsleague Fantastic 4 to Super 6: City and Spurs on the rise?manchestercity Fantastic 4 to Super 6: City and Spurs on the rise?

For the past few years, people from around the world are more than satisfied to put a surefire bet on the either of the “Traditional Big 4” -Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

But during the past 2 seasons, two teams have emerged from the shadows to show that they are more than capable of challenging the “Big 4” and constitute a new “Super 6”.

Powered by an almost unlimited supply of funds, Manchester City have formed a team which draws comparisons with their more “large scale” investors Real Madrid. New signings and dishing out of jaw dropping wages to star players, it has been almost inconceivable that City already haven’t managed to make a breakthrough.

The other team, Tottenham Hotspur, has created a strong foundation in a relatively different way. Harry Redknapp has been instrumental in creating a team capable of matching the standards set by the Big 4. Intelligent signings, strong tactics and a new found eagerness to attack, the Spurs are capable of creating more upsets in the next season, than they have in the last 3 seasons combined. We take a look at both these teams, and do a detailed breakdown on the squads, the tactics and what they might need to boost their chances.

Manchester City

Since the time the Dubai influence arrived in Eastlands, life has been truly “Duty Free”. From day one, where they cheekily hijacked Chelsea’s efforts to sign Brazilian enigma Robinho on the last day of the transfer window, splurging on top rated players hasn’t been a problem at all for the now cash laden City.

Roque Santa Cruz, Robinho, Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez, Nigel De Jong, David Silva, Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure, Patrick Viera… the list goes on and on. With an eye popping salary of 200,000 pounds a week to Yaya Toure, marquee players are getting increasingly interested for a move to the gold mine.

With glittering talent everywhere and a sly tactician in Roberto Mancini, things could get devastatingly better for the City boys, who could give their illustrious neighbours, Manchester United, a run for their money. With the quick and creative David Silva, and the man mountain Yaya Toure joining the ranks, and with an already impressive line up, a chance to upstage either of the Big 4 could be on the cards. Unless of course, they do a Real Madrid.

With great power comes great responsibility, with great stars, comes great ego. A team filled with superstars will lead to a clash of egos, which sometimes spills on to the field. A lack of synchronization, plus an urge to go solo in order to cement your place in team becomes a natural and dangerous possibility. Mancini must know when to say “That’s it” and “I need no more” rather than act like a kid who finds a 10 pound bill stuck to his underwear.

Last season, Robinho and Craig Bellamy showed individually to be open cans of kerosene, easily inflammable at the slightest sparks. All Mancini needs to do, after all this shopping, is to instill a sense of teamwork and togetherness in the squad. If the team realizes they need to work together to get to a common goal, then the team is more than capable of putting in performances like the 4-2 win over the defending champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last season.

But as they say, everything in football hangs on a knife’s edge, so do City’s prospects of a top 4 finish. But one thing is for sure, if Mancini dives into the market again, the other team managers will need to buy artificial nails to chew on.

Transfer ins:

David Silva: Fantastic player, with a blessed left foot and God given ability to produce the killer ball. While at Valencia, Silva was accustomed to playing with two very different strikers, one David Villa, one of the best centre forwards in the world and the other, Serbian international Nikola Zigic, one of the tallest strikers in the world.

Both required different styles of deliveries, while one loved to get defense slitting passes which could be finished with accuracy and precision, the other preferred aerial service, in the form of long diagonal passes and crosses. This made Silva, a superb all round technical player and perhaps the best signing up to this point by any team in the Premier League.

At Manchester City, he will have the options of playing with more variety up front, with a strike force consisting of Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and the mercurial Craig Bellamy.

Yaya Toure: Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can sure make misery a lot easier to live with. Another top class signing, Yaya Toure has already shown he is no pushover(literally). A midfielder with a defensive mentality, who often helps out in attack as well as an astute passer with the ability to keep possession, he will be a vital addition to the squad.

But with already at least 3 defensive midfielders in the squad, namely, Vincent Kompany, Nigel de Jong and Patrick Veira, Yaya Toure will have to be a more regular contributor to City’s attacking options if he is to keep his place in the starting line up. The added incentive of playing in the same team as his brother, might conjure up a few flashes of unexpected magic.

Jerome Boateng: Young German international, who had an indifferent World Cup. Although he looked good in the match against Ghana (largely contributed to the fact he was playing against his own brother), he was replaced in the matches to follow by Marcell Jansen.

A handy left back with speed to burn, he is like a younger version of Liverpool right back Glen Johnson, a very good attacking full back, but poor at tracking back as was so explicitly clear in the quarter final match against Argentina, where he was caught out of position at will by Angel Di Maria.. But everyone learns with experience, and undoubtedly, he will too. He will face stiff competition from Wayne Bridge for the left back role, and that will ensure he will be like wine, he’ll only get better with time.

Transfer requirements?: Yes that’s a stupid question. One can only rack their brains to think what a team like City might need, after buying their own starting eleven in the last 2 years. Perhaps Torres? Or a 150 million pound bid for Xavi? Their only woes came from their midfield, where Martin Petrov and Stephen Ireland performed a little more quietly than they did when they first arrived in England. City just need to look at a way to exploit the full potential of their squad. No more signings required.

Tottenham Hotspur

Another contender for “steal the limelight” award, they can make a major impact if they play the kind of football their players are capable of. Looking at the squad on paper, one wonders why they sometimes just royally fail, like they did against Wolves last season, in the 1-0 defeat. They have 4 top class strikers in Robbie Keane and Jermaine Defoe, both superb finishers on their day, Peter Crouch, who provides the aerial threat with his 6’7 frame and Roman Pavlyuchenko, the strong Russian with superb strength and finishing capabilities. The immensely talented Croatian International, Luka Modric, who even though is one of the shortest players in the Premier League at 5’4, more than makes up for it with his beautiful distribution and vision.

Defensively, Gareth Bale, the left back, is unstoppable when he gets his mood right, and Jonathan Woodgate in the centre of defense will be a tough nut to crack. There are many players who deserve a mention and are capable of changing the way a game pans out, Niko Kranjkar, Wilson Palacios and Tom Huddlestone all capable of being instrumental cogs in the engine room.

The only concern stems from the defense, with Ledley King looking slower and fatigued. Questions will be raised on his ability to last even till the hour mark, leave alone the full 90 minutes, and he probably will have to be 3rd choice after Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson become fit to start alongside Sebastien Bassong.

Harry Redknapp must strengthen his team as a defensive unit, and an efficient support striker would help exploit the bags of attacking talent in the team. Spur fans will be hoping to see Robbie Keane fire on all cylinders, just like the days when he played alongside Dimitar Berbatov.

Transfer Ins:

Sandro: young Brazilian youngster from Internacional, he plays as a defensive midfielder. 21 years old and a formidable presence at 6’2, he is well known for his ball retention abilities. He might be the “bread winner” for the Spurs in their midfield in the years to come. But considering Wilson Palacios is already a given to start in the starting eleven, Sandro will have to wait his turn before he gets a run in the team.

Transfer requirements?: The club’s pursuit of Raul could be a blessing in disguise, a change of scenery and working environment will probably bring out the goals in the Spanish legend. But otherwise, Tottenham look formidable, speed is almost a trademark of the team now, and all that needs to be done is the polishing.

Although someone to replace David Bentley could have been a tempting option, but the return of Aaron Lennon, who was out for most part of the last leg of the season, will compensate. Nothing though, must be left on fate and maybe a player in the centre of the park would be a good addition. Tom Huddlestone is often left to try from distance when he’s frustrated, and Luka Modric with a small frame can be physically intimidated and roughed up.

A player like Sami Khedira with an exquisite range of passing would have been excellent but Tottenham neither have the luxury of affording him nor have the financial prowess to face Real Madrid who are also in his pursuit. Another option could be Slovakian captain Marek Hamsik from Napoli, although he would be tough to get. A deal for either of the Everton playmakers Mikel Arteta or Steven Piennar would be more than satisfactory, and could be the ingredients to the perfect recipe.

Tired? How About Cutting Out The 22,000 Mile Pre-Season Tours?

championsleague Tired? How About Cutting Out The 22,000 Mile Pre Season Tours?acmilan Tired? How About Cutting Out The 22,000 Mile Pre Season Tours?manchesterunited Tired? How About Cutting Out The 22,000 Mile Pre Season Tours?

Amidst the recent furore over the clamour by several leading figures in the game to introduce a fortnight’s winter break to Premier League proceedings, one salient piece of white-hot hypocrisy seems to have been conveniently overlooked.

Many a top-flight manager has been quick to deride the constipated domestic fixture list, with the resultant exhaustion used to vehemently excuse the various ailments and collapses in form that befall many players after toiling away for a 50+ game season.

Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce has long been a prominent voice in the crusade against the overly congested schedule, admitting recently that ‘most of the players who play in the Premier League will be very, very fatigued’ come the end of the season due to the gruelling demands of having to play so many games within such close proximity of one another.

Strange then that Allardyce should agree to wheel his side out on an eight-game, 23,475 mile round-trip pre-season tour of  Australia – a tour which, you would think, sits in stark contrast to his very obvious concerns regarding his squad’s physical welfare.

Similarly, Everton aren’t far behind Blackburn (about 577 miles behind in fact), as the Toffees also chose to chase the Antipodean coin as part of their pre-season preparations under the frankly ludicrous guise of competing for the Roars Against Racism Cup in Brisbane.

I guess the Shameless Shill Cup didn’t have quite the same ring to the marketing department.

Again, when juxtaposed with manager David Moyes‘ continual bemoaning of his depleted squad’s injury problems over the last couple of seasons, his side’s 22,898 mile excursion ‘down under’ seems more than a little duplicitous.

Birmingham have clocked up 16,561 air miles during their tour of the Far East, no doubt pandering to the commercial whims of their Hong Kong-based CEO’s, and Manchester United, City, Bolton and Tottenham have racked up nearly 50,000 miles between them by travelling Stateside in a bid to meet those impending merchandise sales targets.

It seems that the wide-eyed promise of all those easily-acquired dollars may have served to distract the respective club’s hierarchies from the fact that all this pre-season globe-trotting may have just as serious fitness implications as a few extra FA cup replays or international friendlies – although the lack of (or lesser) commercial viability of the latter seem to make them an altogether more pressing concern when the time comes around.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with clubs suckling the corporate teat per se as it’s a measure now necessitated by the bloated financial folly that football has become over the years.

However, what does rile me is that this bare-faced hawking is continually written off as a factor in players struggling to perform in the quota of games that actually matter during any given season, when Liverpool’s 24-hour train journey to Madrid was elevated to the status of a mini-apocalypse in terms of player fatigue just three short months ago.

The ‘winter sabbatical’ debate will probably rumble on for a good few years before any tangible efforts are made to address it (as is the way of the current work-shy scheisters that staff the Football Association along with their European and global contemporaries) but, if Premier League clubs continue to choose to fill every waking off-season hour with revenue-boosting exhibitions in a relentless bid to sate the money men, then they probably deserve all the sodding hamstring tweaks they get.

Premier League Clubs Ban Vuvuzelas Amidst ‘Safety’ Fears

championsleague Premier League Clubs Ban Vuvuzelas Amidst Safety Fears

Three Premier League clubs have all independently announced the banning of vuvuzelas from their stadiums next season, with Tottenham, Arsenal and Birmingham City all declaring that they intend to stem the moronic drone of the plastic trumpet that featured so prevalently at this summer’s World Cup.

Tottenham were the first top flight club to take a stand, posting the news on their official website yesterday evening;

“Following discussions with the Police and representatives from the local licensing authorities, the club will not be permitting vuvuzelas or similar instruments into White Hart Lane on match days.

We are concerned that the presence of the instruments within the stadium pose unnecessary risks to public safety and could impact on the ability of all supporters to hear any emergency safety announcements.

We are very proud of the fantastic atmosphere that our supporters produce organically at White Hart Lane and we are all very much looking forward to this continuing into the forthcoming season.”

Arsenal were quick to follow suit this morning, again stating that ’safety’ concerns (no-one wants bleeding ear drums at a football match) were the overriding factor behind their decision;

“Further to their hugely debated involvement at this summer’s World Cup Finals in South Africa, Arsenal Football Club has decided to forbid the use of vuvuzelas within Emirates Stadium with immediate effect.

This decision has been taken to ensure the enjoyment and safety of supporters on Matchdays, which is of paramount importance to the Club.”

And finally, in the last few minutes in fact, Birmingham City issued a similar declaration of intent;

“We can confirm that supporters will not be allowed to bring vuvuzelas into St. Andrew’s on matchdays.

The club took into account feedback from both supporters and relevant bodies such as the Safety Advisory Committee and have made the decision on health and safety grounds.

An overwhelming majority of Blues supporters said they didn’t want vuvuzelas to be allowed at St. Andrew’s.”

I think you can probably expect a few (hopefully 17) more of these announcements during the few coming days as good old-fashioned chanting and singing make their glorious return to the football-watching experience.

UPDATE: The backlash shows no signs of abating as West Ham have become the fourth Premier League team to announce that they will officially banning vuvuzelas from home games.

UPDATE: It seems that a lot of clubs were just playing chicken over announcing their decisions to blacklist the vuvuzela with Everton, Fulham, Sunderland and Liverpool all now confirming that they plan to ban the monotonous horn.

Transfer Rumors: Liverpool land Joe Cole on four-year deal

championsleague Transfer Rumors: Liverpool land Joe Cole on four year dealliverpool Transfer Rumors: Liverpool land Joe Cole on four year dealmanchestercity Transfer Rumors: Liverpool land Joe Cole on four year deal

England

Liverpool Sign Cole

Joe Cole finally has a new home, and it’s on Merseyside. The former Chelsea man has agreed a four-year deal with Liverpool, and he’s set to have a medical in the next 48 hours to put the finishing touches on his free transfer move. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: As I said yesterday, good, smart move for both sides. We could well look back on Liverpool’s moves for Cole and Milan Jovanovic as the bargain buys of the summer, even with Cole’s wages in mind.

City Close On Balotelli?

According to the Daily Mail (via Italian sources), Manchester City were set to arrive in Italy today to wrap up a £35m deal for Inter striker Mario Balotelli.

Analysis: All of this speculation over a player who shouldn’t go anywhere, much less for £35m right now. Even if it does come to pass, £35m would be more of an investment with the future and potential in mind, and given the question marks and uncertainties, would be an unwise investment at this point.

Arsenal To Bid For Jagielka?

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are ready to bid £18m for Everton defender Phil Jagielka. The Gunners have reportedly already seen a £14m bid rejected for the 27-year-old.

Analysis: There won’t be a repeat of the Joleon Lescott mess, safe to say. Firstly, Everton are unwilling, and secondly, it’d be a little outside of Arsenal’s usual spending procedures to throw down almost 30m on one position in any given summer. I expect to see Arsenal move for another center back even with Koscielny in the fold, but I see them looking more for someone to provide experience and quality depth, not someone like Jagielka.

Villa To Move For Keane?

The Daily Express says that Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne has urged manager Martin O’Neill to make a move for his international teammate Robbie Keane, and that the Villa boss could pounce when Tottenham return from their American tour.

Analysis: There’s been no shortage of speculation about Keane’s future, but one thing that is certain is that he’s not guaranteed a regular start at Tottenham, with Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch the preferred pairing.

Celtic would like to have him back, and they offer the potential of Champions League action, but affording a permanent deal is out of the question. Villa, however, can offer such a deal, along with regular starts and European football. Not to mention, they also need a proven finisher like Keane to enhance their hopes of being able to make a legitimate, prolonged run at the top four this season.

Birmingham Enter Riquelme Race

According to Sky Sports, Birmingham City are interested in signing Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquleme. The 32-year-old is available for free after the end of his contract with Boca Juniors.

Analysis: In the end, I think he’ll re-sign with Boca, but it would be nice to see him in the Premier League before he calls time on his career. He’d certainly liven things up for Birmingham, who have taken at least one step in the right direction towards being livelier and more productive in attack with the addition of Nikola Zigic up front.

Hammers Target Pens New Deal

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Graham Dorrans, who has been the subject of heavy interest from West Ham this summer, has committed his future to the Baggies by signing a new four-year deal. (Daily Mail)

Analysis: It was highly unlikely that he was going anywhere this summer, given his importance to the side, but knowing that they have their top creative presence settled and locked down will certainly be a boost to West Brom’s hopes of doing well this season.

Spain

Atletico Line Up Luis

Atletico Madrid are reportedly close to landing Deportivo La Coruna defender Filipe Luis for €12m. €6m of the €12m will be paid up front, with the other half paid in two installments of €3m. (Goal.com)

Analysis: Filipe would’ve been a factor in Brazil’s World Cup campaign if not for a horrific leg break in January, and that leg break also shows how important he was to Depor. They were 11-4-4 when he went down and in excellent position for a European spot. In the 17 games he missed, they went 2-11-4 and fell well out of the European places.

His sale will certainly hurt, but it will help with the club’s current financial issues. It’ll also help fill a priority for Atletico, whose defensive struggles last season have been documented before in this space.

Hercules In For Samaras

According to Celtic manager Neil Lennon, newly promoted La Liga side Hercules have put an offer in for striker Georgios Samaras. (The Guardian)

Analysis: Celtic just signed Daryl Murphy from Sunderland, but Celtic could do well to keep Samaras. He has had some real cold streaks (he scored only once in his last 17 appearances last season), but when he gets hot, he gets hot. If he can do that on a more regular basis, he’ll be a key part of Celtic being able to wrestle the SPL supremacy back from Rangers.

Italy

Acquafresca Set For Lazio

Lazio have come to an agreement with Genoa for striker Robert Acquafresca, and all that‘s left is for the capital city side to agree personal terms with the 22-year-old. (Sky Sports)

Analysis: Last season was a real step back for Acquafresca, as he had an unsuccessful loan spell at Atalanta and netted only twice in 10 appearances after returning to Genoa in January. However, he’s proven his worth in Serie A at a young age, and hopefully his move to Lazio will see him rediscover the form he had during his two successful seasons at Cagliari.

Germany

Grafite To Leave Wolfsburg?

According to Sky Sports, VfL Wolfsburg could sell their second striker in the span of a week. Fenerbahce have reportedly made an offer for Grafite, and the report says that Wolfsburg are expected to make a decision about the Brazilian goal-getter this week.

Analysis: Grafite took a step back last season after his fantastic 2008/09 campaign, scoring only 11 league goals after netting 28 in leading Wolfsburg to a first-ever Bundesliga title. With that, his age, and new signing Marko Mandzukic in mind, a decent offer is worth seriously considering. His departure would leave Mandzukic and Edin Dzeko as the likely starting pairing, which could see highly-rated Swiss youngster Nassim Ben Khalifa thrown into the fire early on, short of Steve McClaren adding another experienced striker.

Ukraine

Shakhtar Near Eduardo Deal?

The Daily Mail says that Shakhtar Donetsk are on the verge of landing Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva in a £6m deal.

Analysis: A move where he can earn regular starts, regain his confidence, and rediscover his old form is what he needs, so this would be a good move for him. One can only hope and wish for the best for him.
